About The Position

United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial individual to join Community Impact’s leadership team in the evolution and implementation of United Way NCA’s partner, volunteer engagement, and nonprofit capacity building. Reporting to the Vice President of Community Impact & Engagement, the Director, Partner and Volunteer Engagement (Director) will provide strategic and operational leadership for partner and volunteer engagement initiatives, including oversight of the nonprofit partner engagement and eligibility process, eligibility and compliance process for inclusion in United Way NCA federated and managed workplace giving campaigns, volunteer engagement strategy and experiences, nonprofit capacity building, technical assistance, and community partnership development. The Director will work closely with Community Impact leadership and staff to align partner and volunteer engagement opportunities with United Way NCA's Strategic Plan, Community Impact and Resource Development priorities, and municipal/regional strategies. The Director will lead a team and collaborate across departments to create meaningful pathways for nonprofits, volunteers, corporations, government agencies, and community members to contribute their time, expertise, resources, and relationships toward measurable community impact.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit, community engagement, volunteer engagement, partnership development, program management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing relationships with nonprofit, corporate, government, philanthropic, and community partners.
  • Experience designing meaningful volunteer experiences and engagement opportunities.
  • Experience managing and developing staff and/or teams.
  • Demonstrated success planning and directing complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives within budget and with measurable results.
  • Experience using data and performance measures to evaluate programs, partnerships, and engagement strategies.
  • Strong project management, analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and across organizational functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with nonprofit capacity building, technical assistance, training, or organizational development preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, the nonprofit and community landscape in the United Way NCA’s 18-jurisdiction footprint preferred.
  • Demonstrated results in strategic planning and the ability to manage multiple projects strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with United Way NCA’s collective impact frameworks, and place-based initiatives.
  • Experience working within a collective impact or cross-sector collaboration model preferred.
  • Background in program management and fundraising for youth opportunity, healthy community, and financial security programming.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in developing and strengthening partnerships with nonprofit organizations, communities, and other community stakeholders.
  • Maintain strong relationships with nonprofit network partners.
  • Develop meaningful engagement opportunities for nonprofit partners that strengthen relationships, foster collaboration, build organizational capacity, and advance best practices.
  • Develop and oversee the tiered nonprofit membership model to provide differentiated opportunities for engagement, technical assistance, capacity building, collaboration, and access to resources.
  • Cultivate opportunities for nonprofit organizations to partner with United Way NCA on programs, initiatives, volunteer opportunities, grant opportunities, and other community impact efforts.
  • Leverage financial and non-financial resources to strengthen community impact, including supporting fundraising efforts and identifying alternative opportunities for partnership and resource development.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine a comprehensive volunteer engagement strategy aligned with United Way NCA's Community Impact and Resource Development priorities and organizational strategy.
  • Create meaningful volunteer pathways that connect individuals, groups, corporations, and community leaders with opportunities to contribute their time, skills, expertise, and resources to community priorities.
  • Work closely with Community Impact staff and nonprofit partners to identify opportunities where volunteers can meaningfully contribute to program goals and community outcomes.
  • Establish standards and best practices for volunteer engagement, including recruitment, onboarding, orientation, training, communication, recognition, retention, and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with Resource Development to strengthen corporate volunteer engagement as a component of broader partner stewardship and engagement strategies.
  • Monitor and report on volunteer engagement metrics, including recruitment, participation, retention, satisfaction, skills utilization, partner satisfaction, and community impact.
  • Assess volunteer experience and use feedback and data to improve volunteer programs and engagement strategies.
  • Direct the development, implementation and continuous improvement of guidelines and criteria to support effective nonprofit participation in United Way NCA's partner engagement and workplace campaign opportunities.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the annual nonprofit application approval and denial review process for nonprofit applications.
  • Lead cross-functional efforts to strengthen and enhance the online partner application systems and the partner and volunteer databases.
  • Conduct targeted meetings, trainings and engagement activities related to the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) or other employee giving campaigns.
  • Provide organizational leadership and guidance on CFC requirements, policies, and processes.
  • Establish performance measures and an accountability system for partner eligibility and engagement data to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Lead the development and implementation of United Way NCA's nonprofit capacity-building strategy.
  • Assess nonprofit partner needs and develop or coordinate technical assistance, training, learning opportunities, and resources that respond to identified needs.
  • Build opportunities for nonprofit organizations to share knowledge, expertise, resources, and best practices with one another.
  • Oversee the development of tools, resources, workshops, training, and other opportunities that strengthen nonprofit organizational effectiveness.
  • Evaluate capacity-building activities and use participant and partner feedback to continuously improve offerings.
  • Work closely with the Vice President and Community Impact leaders to align partner and volunteer engagement strategies with Community Impact priorities, the Community Commitment, and the Strategic Plan.
  • Translate Community Impact priorities into meaningful engagement opportunities for nonprofits, volunteers, corporations, and community stakeholders.
  • Provide thought leadership on the evolution of partner and volunteer engagement as a strategic asset for United Way NCA's community impact work.
  • Support Regional Councils and other community-facing structures in communicating and advancing Community Impact priorities.
  • Manage, supervise, coach, and develop assigned staff.
  • Establish clear goals, expectations, workplans, and performance measures for the Partner and Volunteer Engagement team.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, service, and continuous improvement.
  • Facilitate communication and coordinated efforts among Community Impact, Resource Development, Marketing and Communications, Finance, and other internal departments.
  • Produce reports and recommendations for the Vice President regarding partner engagement, volunteer engagement, nonprofit capacity building, and emerging opportunities.
  • Manage assigned budgets and resources effectively and in alignment with organizational priorities.
