About The Position

The Office of Global Learning provides leadership and support for the University of Denver's global education efforts across curriculum and campus life. At DU, we foster a vibrant community where international students and scholars are integral members, and where all faculty and students are encouraged to engage in study, research, and service within a global context. Position Summary The Director of the Office of Global Learning (OGL) provides strategic leadership and operational management for the University's education abroad portfolio, overseeing the development and implementation of term-length and alternative study abroad opportunities. This position serves as the primary advisor to students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding global education opportunities and manages all facets of the study abroad experience—from program promotion and site management to pre-departure preparation, credit transfer, compliance, and risk management. The Director collaborates with central budget and planning to oversee study abroad operational and program budgets and champions the integration of study abroad experiences with global learning outcomes across the institution. Reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in international education, higher education administration, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of six years of progressive professional experience in study abroad and international education, including program development, promotion, and long-range planning.
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Advanced understanding of study abroad office operations, including exchange agreements, affiliated program administration, risk management, and student advising.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the complexities of the study abroad experience, including health and safety considerations and cross-cultural adjustment.
  • Strong operational and program budget management skills within a higher education context.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences including faculty, administrators, students, families, and external partners.
  • High degree of intercultural competence and cross-cultural awareness, with a commitment to equity and inclusion in education abroad.
  • In-depth knowledge of study abroad program models, foreign higher education systems, and key international education organizations and networks.
  • Familiarity with learning outcome frameworks, program evaluation protocols, and curricular mapping between study abroad and campus academic units.
  • Understanding of the relationship between education abroad and campus internationalization, including Open Doors reporting and current trends in cross-border education.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and lead a professional staff team in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, exercising sound judgment and communicating effectively across all levels of the institution.
  • Proficiency in relevant technology platforms, including student information systems and education abroad management software.

Nice To Haves

  • Seven or more years of professional experience in international education, with a record of increasing responsibility.
  • Proficiency in at least one language other than English.
  • Significant personal experience living or working abroad.
  • Active engagement with professional associations such as NAFSA or the Forum on Education Abroad.
  • Demonstrated success working with historically underserved student populations.
  • Doctorate or advanced graduate coursework or specialized training in international education or global studies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic planning and portfolio development for education abroad opportunities for undergraduate students, aligned with enrollment targets, financial objectives, university priorities, and curricular needs.
  • Curate and continuously develop a comprehensive education abroad portfolio that reflects institutional goals and supports student populations.
  • Champion the integration of education abroad experiences—including faculty-led programs—into global learning outcomes across academic units.
  • Support and advance university-wide initiatives related to global learning, ensuring alignment with institutional strategy and consistent standards across departments.
  • Lead and manage OIE programs and staff, ensuring high-quality service delivery across all operational functions. Directly supervise five professional staff members with responsibilities spanning academic advising, data reporting, curriculum integration, pre-departure and re-entry programming, and assessment.
  • Foster an inclusive, high-performing team environment by modeling intercultural competence and actively supporting staff professional development.
  • Oversee all study abroad programs at the University of Denver — including undergraduate term-length programs, DU Partner Programs, the financial assistance program, and unaffiliated pathways — managing the full student lifecycle from advising workflows and orientation through family engagement, materials development, and transcript evaluation.
  • Manage support services for international exchange students attending DU, ensuring a welcoming and well-coordinated experience.
  • Maintain a comprehensive operational calendar governing processes and procedures for all study abroad activities.
  • Serve as the primary liaison and institutional representative for DU administration, faculty, students, and external stakeholders on all education abroad matters.
  • Oversee international partnerships and institutional agreements in close collaboration with the Director of Global Partnerships.
  • Maintain effective cross-functional relationships with university offices—including Financial Aid, the Registrar, the Bursar’s Office, Legal Counsel, Enterprise Risk Management, Institutional Research, Academic Advising, Student Rights and Responsibilities, 4D, and Campus Safety—to ensure seamless program administration.
  • In partnership with Enterprise Risk Management and Central Budgeting, oversee all compliance obligations (including VA Benefits, Title IV, Title IX, and the Clery Act), risk and crisis management protocols, and financial agreements governing study abroad programs, including contract review and program fee evaluation.
  • Develop and maintain OIE policies, legal documents, pre-departure materials, and academic standards (including the Global Grades and Credit Scale) related to risk management, student safety, and fiscal accountability.
  • Design and analyze pre- and post-study abroad surveys and learning outcome assessments to evaluate program effectiveness and inform continuous improvement.
  • Strengthen connections between academic coursework and education abroad experiences through rigorous curricular review, faculty development initiatives, and ongoing learning objective assessment.
  • Advance the integration of education abroad into students’ holistic development by articulating clear connections between global learning experiences, career readiness, and post-graduation outcomes.
  • Partner with academic and administrative units across campus to embed study abroad curriculum and outcomes into university-wide goals for global learning and student success.
  • Co-Chair the International Travel Committee.
  • Co-Chair the Internationalization Council.
  • Co-Chair INTZ Coursework Committee.
