About The Position

Pacific Coast Fruit Fresh Company is a local, family owned produce distributor that has proudly served our Pacific Northwest retail, wholesale and food service customers since 1977. We are now one of the largest independent produce distributors in the Northwest with distribution centers in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. We are currently seeking a Director of Transportation for our Portland, OR Division. Pacific Coast Fruit Fresh Company is well positioned to capitalize and lead industry growth and consolidation. Our business continues to grow both in the Northwest and into Canada, elevating the need to maintain strategic and controlled growth while understanding the culture and dynamics of each market segment. The Director of Transportation is responsible for directing all activities in the transportation department necessary to operate and support the division and balance Pacific Coast Fresh Company’s (PCF) customer centric approach while striving to maximize fleet and driver safety and efficiency. Assist in crafting the strategic vision for the transportation department. Performs a variety of management and administrative functions to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of temperature sensitive products to PCF’s customers. This individual must be self-motivated, professional, and experienced with a working knowledge of distributing perishable products with a privately owned and maintained fleet utilizing varied class vehicles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with 7+ years professional experience within a successful mid-to-large size organization, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of FSMA/FMCSA/DOT/ODOT regulations
  • Familiarity and experience with modern fleet management tools in the following areas, on-board camera recording systems, driver behavior tracking tools through GPS, dynamic routing systems and onboard digital driver mobility applications.
  • Advanced understanding of how to lead and develop teams by building mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Proficiency in MS Office products, with emphasis in Excel
  • Ability to speak and write in English is required.

Responsibilities

  • P&L responsibility for the Portland Division of Transportation and Truck Maintenance
  • Creative use of technology, process improvements, as well as developing and leveraging internal teams and departments to meet and exceed customer expectations and company goals
  • Complies with federal, state, and local laws (FSMA/FMCSA/DOT/ODOT) by studying existing, new and emerging legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management
  • Vendor and contract negotiations and execution of approved contracts
  • Maintains delivery operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, transportation, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Defines and recommends objectives; develops specific short- and long-range plans and programs and submits the supporting budget requests
  • Oversees daily execution of transportation activities
  • Performs daily/weekly/monthly reporting as required to support business needs
  • Maintains and enhances metrics related to on-time delivery, time to deliver, miles per gallon, drivers pay incentives etc.
  • Measures results against specified key operating targets
  • Continually improves processes, procedures and infrastructure to improve profitability
  • Holds regularly scheduled weekly meeting with Transportation team members with the goal of constant improvement in productivity and service to customers
  • Works with and through team members to ensure transportation remains focused on safety
  • Assist with training, coaching, mentoring and incenting the transportation supervisory team
  • Provides insight into the Mobility App and dynamic routing related to the Produce Pro software platform.
  • Supports and effectively communicates PCF’s vision, goals and strategies as appropriate to the Transportation team, mentoring employees to encourage growth within current and future roles
