About The Position

The Director of the Tutoring and Writing Centers provides leadership and coordination in the development, implementation, ongoing support, and supervision of the Writing and Tutoring Center activities which includes a range of including individual and group tutoring, embedded tutoring, and Supplemental Instruction. The Director collaborates with the Learning Resource Center Partners (Library/Media, Center for Transformative Teaching, eLearning), Academic Foundations, and other campus student support services. The Director also collaborates with faculty in a variety of subject and program areas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or relevant discipline
  • Two (2) years of formal or informal supervisory experience (such as coaching, leading, consensus building, or mentoring)
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving students with differential educational experiences and implementation of strategies that address the needs of historically underrepresented minorities, first generation, low income, breadth of age range, students with disabilities, veterans and international students
  • Experience teaching, training, and/or tutoring
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Strong teamwork skills

  • Experience working in a Learning/Tutoring/Writing Center in a community college setting

Responsibilities

  • Daily operation and management of the Tutoring Center and Writing Center
  • Recruit, hire, schedule, supervise and evaluate staff, including student staff, supplemental instruction leaders, and embedded tutors within the scope of the positions
  • Create and support a cohesive team of tutors
  • Manage, and provide tutor training content and delivery methods in accordance with guidelines set by the College Reading and Learning Association
  • Provide leadership for emerging, innovative and best practices in tutoring and writing pedagogy
  • Lead and support the ongoing development and assessment of Tutoring/Writing Center services, modalities, workshops, and programs for ongoing improvement in support of student learning, college learning outcomes, and the EvCC Strategic Plan or other college priorities
  • Develop marketing plans to promote the services of the Tutoring/Writing Centers across campus
  • Develop/update/communicate/model Centers’ and College policies, procedures, and expectations to staff and students
  • Assist in building partnerships across college campus to support innovation in learning support programs, services, and initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with other Learning Resource Center Partners to promote services and to create an environment that fosters a sense of belonging and community for all students
  • Develop programs and activities that support students in transitioning to the college environment and building academic skills for success in college
  • Contribute to the college’s Guided Pathways work, specifically related to the pillars of “Stay on the Path” and “Ensure Learning” and aligned with institutional goals for student retention, achievement, and persistence
  • Administer/manage online tutoring support through the Western eTutoring Consortium
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Center for Disability Services to facilitate appropriate accommodations
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff to develop and implement responsive support for academically reinstated and probationary students or other unique student needs and situations
  • Develop and monitor department budgets
  • Identify and provide professional development opportunities for professional tutors
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations and meet the needs of the campus
