About The Position

The Director of the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality administers all finance, human resources, facilities, and other operational activities for a small to mid-sized academic or research program. This role administers major program components and some or all of the program's operational requirements. The Director also develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. The position works under the direction of the Principal Investigator or a more senior Academic Program Officer to establish the center's agenda, funding, and objectives.

Requirements

Juris Doctorate
Active State or DC Bar License; California Bar Admission preferred
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
A minimum of 3 years of experience with trial and appellate litigation focus.

Nice To Haves

Solid fundraising experience.
Knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.

Responsibilities

Solicit and respond to advocacy opportunities consistent with the mission of the Korematsu Center to support robust civil rights litigation both in California and nationally, addressing issues at the intersection of race, ethnicity, class, and other protected statuses.
Engage in priority setting for the Center’s advocacy and impact goals along with the Executive Director and Director.
Manage case acceptance review process.
Manage and track the Center’s case deadlines.
Manage case opening and closing procedures.
Maintain litigation files.
Review processes for conformance with the Rules of Professional Conduct.
Develop and maintain relationships with advocacy communities locally and nationally, including public defenders, civil legal aid advocates, and lawyers in private practice, ensuring the work of the Center is advancing broader advocacy strategies.
Attend public functions on behalf of the Center, both at the law school and in the larger community.
Design and implement a Student Fellow program, including creation of fellow projects and supervising Student Fellows, in collaboration with the Executive Director and Director.
Develop and implement projects with Faculty Affiliates and Korematsu Center Non-resident Fellows.
Develop joint projects with the UCI Law Clinics and the UCI Law Pro Bono Director.
Develop and maintain relationships with pro bono counsel at law firms, advocacy organizations, and centers on race and law as part of the Race and Law Centers Network.
Research and draft occasional reports that address inequality in the criminal legal system and in other areas.
Support fundraising and development work of the Center, including grant prospecting and grant writing.
