About The Position

The Director of Teacher Development role exists to ensure that every classroom has an effective teacher. The Director of Teacher Development will ensure that we are able to prioritize strong teacher development systems, intervene in classrooms of concern, and support long-term teacher development structures including professional development and practice clinics. The Director of Teacher Development will design, align, and oversee high-impact professional learning systems that build instructional leadership capacity, improve teacher practice, and ensure consistent implementation of network-wide academic priorities. This role will work directly and in collaboration with content-experts on the Academics Team to ensure that professional development is coherent for both priority content areas as well as our focus on data-drive instruction. This full-time position is a part of our Home Office Team and is a key member of KIPP Colorado’s leadership team. This is a full-time position and will report directly to the Managing Director of Instructional Leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (required)
  • At least 5-7 years of relevant and aligned experience in teacher development or instructional leadership (required)
  • At least 5 years of school based experience and/or a strong record of helping underserved students achieve academic success (required)
  • Past experience (2 years) of leading adults in a school environment (required)
  • A full understanding and Commitment to an Exceptional Student Experience (more about that HERE) (required)
  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage the ambiguity and multiple priorities inherent in an entrepreneurial environment

Responsibilities

  • Read, internalize, and adhere to the KIPP Colorado Policies and Procedures manual and guidelines
  • Provide an active presence, strategic supervision, and intentional monitoring to ensure student safety and engagement in rigorous learning (regardless of my role and its proximity to students)
  • Take ownership for the development of your craft and engage actively in coaching sessions (meet 1-2 times every 1 or 2 weeks (depending on need and role) with a manager, receive coaching, implement all provided feedback, engage in active practice, etc.)
  • Commit to being prepared. Such as: internalizing and preparing for lessons, preparing for O3s/coaching, preparing for meetings, coaching, PD, reading and internalizing written communication, etc.
  • Meet professional obligations including and not limited to meeting deadlines and honoring schedules
  • Consistently leverage existing professional tools, including but not limited to Google Suite (google documents, etc.) and Microsoft Suite (including but not limited to your KIPP Colorado email, Teams chat / meetings, Teams phone, and Microsoft Outlook calendar)

  • Share candid, solutions-oriented feedback with peers and leadership on a regular basis, assuring that feedback is shared directly with the intended recipient. Ensure that feedback is focused on improving outcomes and experiences for students
  • Assist with both student and staff recruitment and engagement- including events, home visits, calls home, and other determined and related requirements
  • Know that your role, professional development, org wide meetings, etc. may require you to travel around Denver to other KIPP Campuses, our Home Office, or other KIPP or PD events
  • Assist with other duties as assigned (such as but not limited to, lunch duty, arrival/dismissal duty, bathroom duty, hallway duty, school support duties, etc.)
  • Research, build, and design teacher development systems that drive teacher effectiveness across all academy levels.
  • Design and implement a network-wide vision for teacher development aligned to the Arc of the Year, Big 3 Goals, and instructional priorities.
  • Build and maintain high-quality professional learning sessions that follow a predictable pattern of learning and development aligned to the Arc of the Year and network-wide vision for development.
  • Build a coherent system for teacher growth from onboarding through advanced instructional practice.
  • Ensure alignment between curriculum, assessment (ANet, DIBELS, i-Ready, SAT), and professional learning.
  • Monitor the implementation and impact of professional learning systems across schools to ensure that teacher practice is improving.
  • Consistently use data (teacher effectiveness, student outcomes, walkthrough data) to continuously improve systems across the region and schools.
  • Use research based best practices to build and execute effective classroom turnaround systems for targeted classrooms.
  • In partnership with the Managing Director of Instructional Leadership, identify gaps and deploy targeted support to teachers in schools.
  • Working in close partnership with the Chief People and Learning Officer and the Managing Director of Manager Learning & Development ensure that Leaders in your leadership vertical are strong people managers with the skills, tools, and mindsets required to lead high-performing teams and strong adult cultures.
  • In partnership with the Managing Director of Manager Learning & Development ensures that coaching and development is aligned to the organization’s Manager Vision of Excellence and Leadership Competency Framework.
  • In partnership with the Managing Director of Instructional Leadership, build the tools, resources, and development to ensure that campus ILTs and teachers are able to respond to data.
  • In collaboration with the Academics Team, Content Directors and the Data Team ensure that we are building data literacy across roles and academy levels.
  • Model best practices for using data to improve student learning including data-in-hand practices and responsive data.
  • In partnership with the Talent Team, support building teacher pipelines (e.g. teacher leaders) to ensure that teachers see a pathway for their long-term career trajectory.
  • Identify teachers who can be supported in moving from good to great and then coach and develop them to be model classrooms across KIPP Colorado.
  • Successfully balance decision-making that is in the best interest of the organization, schools, and students.
  • Assure alignment between the priorities of both KIPP Colorado and the KIPP Foundation by building relationships and investment with all parties and supporting the efficacy staff in our schools.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with organization leaders and other critical stakeholders including the Executive Team, Principals, and other Home Office leaders.
  • Meet with internal and external stakeholders and synthesize their concerns, challenges, and ideas into easily understandable and actionable recommendations.
