About The Position

3M announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Bain Capital to form a new Joint Venture which will combine Scott Safety and Madison Fire and Rescue. The successful candidate may be employed by 3M prior to closing and the position is expected to transition to the Joint Venture following completion of the transaction. This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military experience to a 3M career. We are seeking a seasoned Tax Director (ideally in the Chicago, Illinois or Monroe, NC area) to lead the tax function for a newly formed Joint Venture between 3M and Bain Capital. You will oversee all aspects of direct and indirect taxation of the JV, ensuring legal compliance while optimizing our tax position, managing relationships between management and the JV partners and ensuring that all tax allocations and compliance filings adhere to the governing JV agreement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required (completed and verified prior to start)
  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting and/or in-house roles, including experience managing outsourced compliance engagements and supported M&A transactions in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).

Nice To Haves

  • CPA Certification or master's in taxation (MST) preferred
  • Experience and proficiency with ASC 740 rules and calculations
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. and international direct and indirect tax laws, including transfer pricing and global structuring
  • Experience with foreign tax issues in common holding and operating jurisdictions for multinational companies
  • Demonstrated critical thinking capabilities to identify and support resolution of tax issues and cross functional impacts of such issues in a broad range of projects including internal and external cross border and domestic reorganizations and changes in business circumstances
  • Experience researching/analyzing/working through complex foreign, federal, state and local tax issues
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills coupled with strong interpersonal and team-building capabilities across different functional areas and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage tax projects, including effective collaboration with other tax and non-tax stakeholders
  • Strong desire to collaborate across both the tax function and broader organization
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure and comfortably manage an external team

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement global tax planning strategies.
  • Oversee all federal, state, and international tax filings.
  • Manage quarterly and annual income tax accounting obligations (under ASC 740).
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for tax authority audits.
  • Provide tax due diligence support for acquisitions and restructuring.
  • Advise leadership on the tax impact of business decisions.
  • Corporate policies, procedures and security standards are complied with while performing assigned duties.
  • Contribute to a strong Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) culture by following safety policies, identifying hazards, and engaging in continuous improvement.
