About The Position

Solar One is a 501c(3) organization that empowers communities in the New York City metro area to thrive in the face of the challenges brought on by climate change and embrace a world that is low-carbon, resource-efficient, and socially inclusive. Founded in 2004 to manage Stuyvesant Cove Park, a two-acre native plant park and small environmental education center, Solar One has grown into an award-winning organization with a thriving array of programs. Solar One's mission is to design and deliver innovative education, training, and technical assistance that fosters sustainability and resiliency in diverse urban environments. We empower learning that changes how people think about energy, sustainability, and resilience by engaging and educating diverse stakeholders and beneficiaries. Solar One seeks a Director of STEM Education to lead various projects and programming for our K-12 Education team. The Director of STEM Education will administer, train, and manage STEM Educators and oversee STEM programs.

Requirements

Five years of experience teaching K-12 students content aligned with STEM, climate action, and/or environmental sustainability. Classroom experience is strongly preferred.
Five years of experience delivering professional development training to teachers.
Experience managing an education team.
Experience with curriculum development.
Experience managing a programmatic budget.
Demonstrated success in communicating with partner organizations and individuals to build and maintain strong partnerships.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Strong customer service skills.
Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel PowerPoint, Outlook, and/or Google Suite, including Calendar, Docs, Spreadsheet, and Drive.
Bachelor’s Degree required.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of anti-racist and culturally responsive pedagogy is strongly preferred.
Master’s preferred in education or related fields.

Responsibilities

Hire, train, and manage a team of educators (3-4)
Hold regular 1:1 and team meetings.
Observe educators and provide evaluative feedback.
Promote educator upskilling and professional development.
Work with peer Directors to staff across other education programs.
Director is responsible for managing the STEM budget
Reaching or exceeding revenue targets related to in-school programming and out-of-school time programming for youth.
Managing programming expenses
Managing STEM program design, including goal setting, logic models, and tracking deliverables.
Marketing in-school and summer programs to school audiences.
Maintaining partnerships and relationships with funders, including reporting and tracking metrics.
Lead Solar One’s professional development training series for teachers in NYC and NYS.
Oversee coordination of programs with schools and other community partners. This includes planning programs, coordinating materials, scheduling, and developing proposals.
Partnership development for mission-aligned programs.
Assisting with grant writing and tracking.
Collaborating with other internal education programs.
Ensuring staff has adequate program supplies, maintaining inventory.
Managing curriculum resources for STEM program, ensuring resources are up-to-date and appropriate for teachers and students. This curriculum should support teacher training. Curriculum should be standards-aligned and connected to changing graduation requirements.
Attending network meetings for NYCSTEM Network, EEAC, or other comparable professional network to stay abreast of changes or trends in the field.
Post-program reporting and evaluation.
