About The Position

Harborview Spiritual Care has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Spiritual Care. This is a Full-Time position working 40 Hours Per Week on Day Shifts. The position provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for Harborview's Spiritual Care Department, overseeing a team of more than 25 staff, volunteers, and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) interns. The role ensures the delivery of high-quality, culturally responsive spiritual care for patients, families, and staff through a 24/7 onsite program that supports holistic care across the organization. Responsibilities include departmental leadership, budgeting, staffing, performance management, and program development, as well as providing support to staff during critical incidents, grief, and memorial events. As an ACPE Certified Educator, the Director also leads the department's accredited CPE program, overseeing student recruitment, curriculum, instruction, evaluation, and continuous program improvement. This position requires balancing concurrent responsibilities for department leadership, clinical education, and organizational staff support while ensuring continuous 24/7 spiritual care coverage. The Director manages complex operational, personnel, and customer service issues, often responding to urgent situations with little notice. Success requires strong leadership, communication, teaching, decision-making, change management, and organizational skills, along with the ability to prioritize competing demands and adapt quickly in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate and graduate degree appropriate to leadership of spiritual care in a public hospital and academic medical center.
  • Endorsement by faith or spiritual community.
  • Minimum of three years full-time spiritual care leadership experience.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience as Certified Educator, certified by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)

Responsibilities

  • Oversee department administration: responsible for departmental policies and procedures, staffing, fiscal management and organizational development.
  • Direct all operations of the department and is responsible for the quality of spiritual care provided.
  • Participate in hospital policy setting and decision making and takes part in appropriate hospital committees, e.g., HMC Ethics Committee, department leadership meetings.
  • Provide and coordinate spiritual care at Harborview Medical Center with patients, families and staff of diverse traditions and personal practices, collaborating with the Associate Director for Well-Being and Support.
  • Arranges for spiritual care service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and serve as spiritual care specialist for hospital.
  • Provide education opportunities in spiritual care for CPE students, department volunteers, staff and on-call spiritual care providers, and the wider religious/ spiritual community.
  • Serve as a liaison to spiritual/religious and community organizations concerning the work of the department.
