About The Position

The Director, Software Engineering provides strategic, technical, and people leadership for Ontada’s engineering organization. This leader owns the vision and execution for scalable healthcare data platforms, pipelines, data products, analytics, and integrations that power value-based care programs and actionable clinical and business insights. The role requires deep expertise in modern data engineering, including cloud data platforms, batch and streaming architectures, data quality, governance, interoperability, and secure handling of healthcare data. Experience leading enterprise web and SaaS application engineering—including microservices, APIs, distributed systems, and cloud-native delivery—is also required but serves as a secondary capability that enables end-to-end VBC solutions. The Director partners with Product, Analytics, Data Science, Clinical Informatics, Architecture, Security, and Operations to translate VBC strategy into reliable, trusted, and measurable technology outcomes. This position offers the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement based on recent updates to our in-office/work‑from‑home model. If located in DFW area, the selected candidate may be expected to work on‑site at our Las Colinas office a minimum of two (2) days per week, with the remaining days worked remotely. Specific in‑office days may be designated according to team needs and business priorities.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 12+ years of professional experience and 4+ years of management experience.
  • 12+ years of technology experience, with substantial depth in data engineering, data platforms, analytics engineering, or related disciplines, including 4+ years in technical leadership roles overseeing multiple teams or managers.
  • Deep experience designing and operating enterprise-scale cloud data platforms, lakehouse and warehouse solutions, batch and streaming pipelines, data models, reusable data products, and secure data-sharing capabilities. Strong knowledge of Databricks, Apache Spark, Python, SQL, Delta Lake, orchestration, event streaming, metadata, lineage, observability, and data quality controls.
  • Experience delivering data capabilities for value-based care, population health, quality measures, clinical analytics, claims, payer-provider exchange, or adjacent healthcare domains. Working knowledge of HIPAA, PHI protection, data governance, and healthcare interoperability standards is strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience with enterprise web or SaaS platforms, microservices architecture, APIs, distributed systems, cloud-native design, containerization, automated testing, and CI/CD. This experience is required to lead integrated VBC solutions but is secondary to the role’s data engineering depth.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and scale engineering and data teams, manage managers, and drive an inclusive, high-performance culture. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience presenting technology and data strategies to executive leadership and business stakeholders.
  • Strategic and analytical mindset with a passion for innovation. Able to guide teams in solving complex technical and data challenges, troubleshooting production issues, and making data-informed decisions that balance short-term needs with long-term platform health.
  • Familiarity with enterprise security, compliance, interoperability, data privacy standards, and healthcare data ecosystems. Healthcare technology experience or knowledge of regulated industries is highly valued, with an understanding of HIPAA, PHI, interoperability standards, and healthcare analytics as a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or MBA with technical focus).
  • Prior leadership of data engineering teams in healthcare technology, value-based care, clinical analytics, payer-provider solutions, or another regulated environment is strongly preferred. Experience modernizing legacy data estates, adopting cloud lakehouse platforms, and integrating data platforms with enterprise SaaS applications is a plus.
  • Financial acumen and project portfolio management experience, including budgeting and ROI analysis for technology and data initiatives.
  • Experience managing relationships with third-party vendors, implementation partners, and analytics service providers.
  • Strong awareness of emerging trends in software engineering, cloud technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data engineering, and healthcare analytics, demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Experience with modern data platform technologies including Databricks, Apache Spark, Python, SQL, Delta Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Power BI, Tableau, and enterprise reporting ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Define and lead the technical vision for Ontada’s VBC data ecosystem, including cloud data platforms, lakehouse and warehouse architectures, batch and streaming pipelines, shared data services, and governed data products.
  • Build and deliver multi-release roadmaps that support value-based care workflows, quality measurement, performance reporting, risk and population insights, and partner data exchange. Align investments to product priorities, customer outcomes, regulatory needs, and measurable business value.
  • Lead managers, architects, data engineers, analytics engineers, and software engineers within the organization. Set clear accountability, strengthen technical leadership, and build a high-performance culture grounded in engineering discipline, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish standards for data contracts, lineage, observability, reconciliation, testing, metadata, incident management, and service-level objectives. Drive root-cause analysis and durable fixes that improve the accuracy, timeliness, reliability, security, and auditability of data.
  • Provide hands-on oversight of data architecture and critical design decisions. Advance modern patterns using Databricks, Spark, Python, SQL, Delta Lake, orchestration, event streaming, cloud services, AI/ML, and automation where they create clear value.
  • Deliver reusable, trusted data products and integrations across clinical, claims, quality, financial, and operational domains. Support healthcare interoperability and partner exchange using appropriate standards, APIs, and event-driven patterns.
  • Ensure the VBC data platform integrates effectively with enterprise web and SaaS applications. Guide teams on microservices, REST APIs, distributed systems, cloud-native engineering, CI/CD, security, scalability, and production reliability.
  • Work closely with Product, Clinical Informatics, Analytics, Data Science, Architecture, QA, Security, SRE/Operations, customers, and external partners to define outcomes, resolve priorities, and communicate VBC technology strategy, delivery status, risks, and decisions.
