About The Position

The Director of Safety & Training will assist the V.P. of Safety & Risk Management in providing leadership for programs aimed at preventing occupational illnesses, motor vehicle accidents, environmental liabilities, injuries, deaths, and financial losses. This role involves managing fleet safety, directing driver training, identifying and recommending solutions for physical and health hazards, and coordinating emergency response activities. The position also includes research into hazards and prevention, developing loss prevention systems, monitoring and analyzing safety data, and maintaining liaison with regulatory agencies. Ensuring compliance with DOT FMCSA, OSHA, and other relevant regulations is crucial, as is adhering to all environmental, health, safety, and training policies. The role also encompasses risk management, including monitoring claims, participating in claim reviews and litigation, and providing direct safety support to assigned terminals. Presenting safety information at meetings and coordinating with operations and other departments to implement policies and develop training materials are key responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to read, write, use basic algebra, geometry and shop math and understand written, verbal or diagrammatic instructions, including instructions, manuals, rules, regulations, etc.
  • Must have strong, effective communication skills with diverse groups of people. This includes making presentations to internal and external groups
  • Must possess valid driver’s license
  • Requires basic computer skills
  • Will be required to work afterhours and weekends
  • Frequent travel required
  • Must be able to safely perform job on and around machinery that could cause bodily harm or death if proper procedures are not followed
  • Bachelor's degree required, business or law major preferred
  • Has a minimum of five years of trucking industry experience in either safety or operational management level positions

Responsibilities

  • Assist V.P of Safety & Risk Management with providing leadership in planning, implementing, and coordinating programs to prevent or reduce occupational illnesses, motor vehicle accidents, environmental liabilities, injuries, deaths, and financial losses
  • Manages and directs Fleet Safety Supervisor activities
  • Directs and manages driver training process and programs
  • Identifies physical and health hazards and recommends changes which could prevent accidents or financial losses
  • Coordinates and directs incident emergency response activities with internal personnel, contractors, insurance representatives and legal counsel on a 24/7 basis
  • Conducts or directs research to identify hazards and prevention
  • Assist with Developing loss prevention systems, recommends policy, and coordinates activities to insure implementation of policy
  • Monitors, compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical and fleet telematic data related to employee exposure and coordinates corrective action
  • Assists with maintaining a liaison with federal, state and local safety and health regulatory and emergency response agencies to assure information exchange
  • Keeps current on DOT FMCSA, OSHA, safety, health, and loss related regulations and trends and modifies the safety program to ensure compliance in operations
  • Complies with all environmental, health, safety & training policies, procedures and requirements
  • Risk management - monitors claim activity on auto & general liability and worker’s compensation claims
  • Participates in claim reviews and associated litigation with defense counsel
  • Assist in mediations as needed (TBD by V.P. of Safety & Risk Management)
  • Has direct safety support responsibilities to terminals as assigned by the V.P. of Safety & Risk Management
  • Present safety & compliance information at terminal safety meetings
  • Coordinates with the V.P. of Operations to implement and maintain safety policies and procedures
  • Coordinates with various department heads to design and produce training material for training purposes, i.e. dispatch training material, terminal manager training material.
