About The Position

Under the direction of the Pastor or School Principal, this position is responsible for the management of the Religious Education program for a Parish or School. The Director shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life. This role involves performing as a lay ecclesial minister in support of the parish’s spiritual and pastoral mission, abiding by Catholic principles in both professional and private life, and governing one's life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles. The Director will assist the Pastor or Principal in articulating a vision within the community, including needs assessment, setting priorities, goals, and objectives, and implementing plans of action. This role requires communication and cooperation with all parish ministers and staff, serving as a resource, and participating in necessary meetings. Key responsibilities include planning curriculum, assessing needs, incorporating prayer, service, and outreach, administering Religious Education programs, coordinating programs, assigning catechists and volunteers, maintaining sacramental records, setting and enforcing facilities guidelines, ensuring a safe environment, recruiting and forming Catechists, managing religious education staff, coordinating with Diocesan staff, ensuring adherence to personnel policy guidelines, preparing reports, and ensuring adherence to Diocese of Tucson Safe Environment requirements. The role also involves assisting in drafting and implementing Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) for youth activities and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Roman Catholic Church.
  • If a baptized Catholic, must be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written.

  • Must be a self-starter; well organized; perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency.

  • Weekend and overtime work may be required.
  • Proficiency in computer technology to include word-processing, spreadsheets and power point.

  • Ability to successfully pass a background, criminal history, and credit history check.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, education or public administration or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a Catholic religious education environment as an educator or practicing catechist.
  • Level 1 catechetical certification or equivalent education.

  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Level 2 catechetical certification or equivalent education preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as a lay ecclesial minister in support of the parish’s spiritual and pastoral mission.
  • Abide by Catholic principles in the director’s professional and private life, and govern his/her professional and private life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate complete adherence to Catholic moral strictures.
  • Assist the Pastor or Principal articulate a vision within the community to include an assessment of needs, setting of priorities, setting of goals and objectives, and the implementation of plans of action.
  • Communicate and cooperate with all parish ministers and parish or school staff to include conflict resolution, serve as a resource and support for other ministers and staff, participate in meetings as necessary.
  • Plan Curriculum, assess needs, incorporate prayer, service and outreach at all levels.
  • Assist the pastor or principal in administering Religious Education programs to include program coordination, assign catechists and volunteers, keep sacramental records, set and enforce facilities guidelines; ensure a safe environment is in place.
  • Recruit and form Catechists, including Catechist education and training, adhering to Diocesan guidelines.
  • Assist in managing religious education staff including screening and employment, and assignment of volunteers, in accordance with Diocesan policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate as necessary, activities with Diocesan staff.
  • Ensure adherence to personnel policy guidelines.
  • Prepare reports as necessary.
  • Assist with ensuring adherence to Diocese of Tucson Safe Environment requirements at all times.
  • Assist in drafting and implementation of Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) for youth activities as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
