Director of Regional Underwriting (Dealers Division)
About The Position
The Director of Underwriting leads the underwriting strategy, operations, and team for the Dealers Insurance Division, serving franchised and non-franchised auto, used auto, motorcycle, and powersports dealers. This leader is responsible for driving profitable growth through effective risk selection, underwriting quality, portfolio performance management, and regulatory compliance. The role oversees underwriting staff development and performance, monitors market and regulatory changes, partners closely with Marketing and Agency Distribution, and collaborates across functions to enhance service, workflow efficiency, and producer relationships while ensuring the division delivers strong underwriting results and exceptional customer service.
Requirements
- Four (4) year college degree or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years previous commercial underwriting leadership experience preferred.
- 5+ years of Middle Market Underwriting experience.
Responsibilities
- Manage the Underwriting Department for our Eastern Regional Office.
- Provide technical supervision and surveillance for risk selection and underwriting review functions, including Quality Control spot-check duties.
- Carry out responsibilities as to all personnel, including hiring, firing, administering salaries, counseling, reviewing performance, coaching/developing, and training.
- Evaluate changes in rates, coverage, rules, regulations, statutes, or other external factors impacting regional experience and take appropriate action locally, making recommendations to the Home Office.
- Monitor loss experience and take appropriate underwriting action to improve it.
- Evolve work flow procedures with the Manager of Services to ensure adequate service to producers and facilitate internal processing.
- Maintain effective liaison with the Marketing Department and producers; oversee the planning of agency visits by all underwriting personnel.
- Prepare bulletins and letters to producers transmitting notices of changes in manual pages, rates, underwriting policies, and procedures.
- Abide by the “Responsibilities Common to all Executives and Supervisors.”
