About The Position

Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all. Role Summary The Director of Product Management, Cloud Engineering is responsible for defining product strategy, roadmap, and measurable business outcomes for athenahealth’s cloud engineering capabilities and internal cloud platform services. This leader translates Cloud Engineering strategy into clear product direction, aligning engineering investment to the needs of internal users, dependent product teams, and the long-term modernization goals of the business. This role sits at the intersection of Cloud Engineering, Product Engineering, R&D, Security, Finance, and Infrastructure, and is accountable for shaping a coherent portfolio of capabilities that improve scalability, reliability, security, productivity, and cost efficiency. The Director will lead product management for cloud services and experiences, ensuring teams are focused on the highest-value opportunities and that execution remains aligned to business priorities. The ideal candidate pairs strategic product thinking with strong technical judgment and operational discipline. They are comfortable owning complex spaces, making tradeoffs across competing stakeholder needs, and driving clarity in ambiguous, cross-functional environments. This role is central to athena’s cloud evolution and will help ensure that cloud capabilities are easy to adopt, well-governed, financially responsible, and designed to deliver durable value over time.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in product management, platform product management, or technical product leadership in complex software environments.

  • Demonstrated success owning roadmap and business outcomes for platform or system-level products spanning multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong product judgment in technically complex environments, including ability to assess tradeoffs, influence priorities, and partner effectively with engineering leaders.
  • Experience defining measurable product outcomes such as adoption, quality, productivity, service performance, cost efficiency, or customer satisfaction.
  • Strong business acumen, including experience supporting investment decisions, cost management, and value-based prioritization.
  • Proven ability to lead through influence across Product, Engineering, Security, Finance, and operational teams.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and storytelling skills across executive, technical, and operational audiences.
  • Experience building and leading high-performing product teams, including coaching, performance management, and talent development.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-moving environments while maintaining strategic clarity and execution rigor.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a software, engineering, computer science, information systems, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare, regulated enterprise platforms, or SaaS/PaaS environments is a plus.
  • Experience with AI-enabled platform capabilities, developer productivity tooling, or modernization programs is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own Product Strategy and Roadmap for Cloud Engineering: Define and maintain the product vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap for Cloud Engineering platform capabilities and services. Translate modernization priorities, service maturity goals, and platform investment needs into a coherent product portfolio with clear outcomes and sequencing. Partner with leadership to evolve public and private cloud capabilities, internal services, and operating models. Ensure product direction reflects business priorities across scalability, stability, security, resilience, cost management, and productivity. Make principled tradeoffs across customer needs, technical constraints, and organizational capacity.
  • Drive Business Outcomes Through Product Management: Own measurable outcomes for cloud products and services, including adoption, satisfaction, reliability, efficiency, governance, and value realization. Establish product success metrics and use telemetry, customer feedback, and operational data to inform decisions and reprioritize investments. Identify the most important product optimization opportunities for internal users and dependent teams, and ensure they are reflected in the roadmap. Partner with Engineering, Architecture, and operations leaders to improve the usability and effectiveness of cloud services and workflows. Support build-versus-buy decisions, service boundary decisions, and lifecycle management for platform capabilities.
  • Serve as the Voice of the User and the Business: Represent the needs of internal customers, including engineers, product teams, platform consumers, and operational stakeholders. Build strong feedback loops with users to understand pain points, friction in adoption, service gaps, and emerging needs. Translate complex technical capabilities into clear product narratives, priorities, and decision frameworks. Support escalations related to product direction, service expectations, adoption, and cross-team dependencies. Help shape change management and communications strategies that improve awareness, trust, and successful rollout of new platform capabilities.
  • Lead Cross-Functional Planning, Alignment, and Governance: Partner closely with Cloud Engineering, Product, R&D, Security, Finance, and Infrastructure leaders to align roadmaps, funding priorities, dependencies, and delivery plans. Contribute product leadership to consolidated cloud roadmaps and unified initiative views across Cloud Engineering and partner organizations. Help define service expectations, onboarding paths, documentation standards, and policy frameworks for cloud platform services. Create the transparency, governance, and operating rhythms needed to manage complex product decisions across multiple teams. Bring structure to ambiguity through clear prioritization, crisp communication, and disciplined execution.
  • Build and Lead a High-Impact Product Team: Lead, coach, and develop product managers and/or product owners responsible for Cloud Engineering capabilities and internal platform experiences. Set high standards for product thinking, customer centricity, roadmap quality, backlog discipline, stakeholder management, and outcome ownership. Help product leaders grow in technical fluency, business acumen, and influence across engineering-heavy environments. Build team operating mechanisms that reinforce accountability, fast learning, and continuous improvement. Address performance and capability gaps directly while creating strong development paths for high-potential talent.
  • Shape the Future of Platform Experiences: Partner with users and leaders to improve the end-to-end experience of cloud services, not just the underlying technical capability. Ensure products are understandable, trustworthy, and easy to adopt for technical users. Apply AI and automation intentionally where they improve product outcomes, accelerate learning, or simplify internal workflows. Balance long-term strategy with near-term delivery, ensuring ideas translate into shipped value.
