About The Position

The Director of Parks and Recreation will oversee the recreational programs put on by the county's sports facilities, community centers, or other institutions, and manage all public park facilities. This role involves planning, organizing, and directing the operations of sports and fitness programs, activities, and services. Key responsibilities include managing publicity and finances for programs, and leading coaches and other individuals involved in running activities. The director will also be responsible for promoting programs through community relations and engagement.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of Parks and Recreation experience working in a Director-level role
  • Demonstrated experience developing programs that meet community needs
  • Experience managing an annual budget of $1,000,000 with additional skills in community fundraising
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel & Publisher
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience managing a team of 10+ coordinators and specialists
  • Effective decision-making and negotiation skills
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures, First Aid and CPR
  • Knowledge of the management and operation of recreation facilities and equipment
  • Understanding of coaching theory and practice

Responsibilities

  • Assess the recreation requirements of the community or organization, and plan new and existing activity programs that meet those needs.
  • Communicate with community members and research various sport and recreation programs.
  • Ensure a variety of sport, recreation, and cultural programs are planned and implemented.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and identify future needs.
  • Implement recreation programs and ensure they are well-utilized and successful.
  • Research high and low performing programs and develop creative strategies to reach the community.
  • Create and manage schedules for activities and facilities.
  • Manage a $1,000,000 annual budget and work to raise additional funds from the community.
  • Prepare and adhere to the recreation program budget for the following year.
  • Prepare financial and program reports concerning programs, costs, participant numbers, and equipment and facility use.
  • Promote programs through an active community relations campaign.
  • Arrange for advertising of programs as needed and maintain constant community engagement.
