About The Position

The Director of Nursing is responsible for managing key operational systems including Quality, Service Design, Process Design, Location, Layout, People, and Work Systems. This role involves establishing and monitoring Continuous Quality Improvement performance standards, and maintaining a visible presence in assigned service areas to influence results through engagement with processes, performance monitoring, and relationship building. The Director ensures a safe environment for patients, customers, and guests, and responds to service concerns. They manage day-to-day scheduling and staffing decisions to ensure optimal coverage and patient care. Human Resource Management includes facilitating individual staff development through selection, orientation, performance evaluation, communication, and coaching, as well as conducting corrective actions and writing/reviewing job descriptions. Financial stewardship involves managing direct expenses, the revenue cycle, and updating Senior Management on variances with action plans. Resource planning includes budget preparation, evaluating efficiency opportunities, and prioritizing capital needs. The role is focused on patient satisfaction by investigating and addressing concerns, acting as a change agent for patient-focused care, and maintaining compliance with licensure, regulatory, and accreditation standards. The Director provides leadership oversight for the Clinical Coordinator of Surgical Services and Orthopedic department staff, performs audits, and addresses improvement opportunities. In the absence of the Executive Director, they provide leadership and decision-making. They advise the Executive Management Team on best practices, act as a spokesperson for nursing issues, create a collaborative nursing environment, partner with physicians for patient safety and workflow, and ensure nursing standards are upheld. Additionally, the Director provides Orthopedic education to pre-op patients.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Employment.
  • Principles and practices of hospital administration and basic knowledge of nursing services and ancillary departments.
  • Development, coordination and delivery of medical services.
  • Government regulations and codes including but not limited to The Joint Commission, State Agencies, ARRA, COLA, Pharmacy Board, and Nursing Board.
  • Administrative reporting and control procedures.
  • Principles and practices of administrative supervision and decision making.
  • Risk management issues in a hospital setting.
  • Hospital and healthcare policies to direct operations.
  • Employee development.
  • Healthcare marketing to include all musculoskeletal specialties.
  • Perioperative and department efficiency, AORN, SPD and ASPAN standards.
  • Exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment and discretion and decision making to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Analyzing situations accurately and taking effective action.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, providers, management and the public.
  • Delegating assignments, achieving goals and objectives.
  • Exercising judgment and discretion on developing, applying, interpreting and coordinating departmental policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s in Nursing (MSN) is preferred.
  • Surgical services and quality management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the revenue cycle within area of influence.
  • Updates Senior Management on variances containing qualitative and quantitative analysis with action plans for the next financial period.
  • Prepares budget for areas of responsibility to reflect an increase in value for the patient.
  • Evaluates tasks and processes to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency.
  • Prioritized capital needs of the organization based upon goals, and technology required for patient care.
  • Investigates and addresses patient concerns.
  • Personally manages the appropriate internal follow-up regarding the concern or complaint.
  • Acts as a change agent for patient focused care in assigned services.
  • Maintains ongoing compliance with licensure, regulatory, and accreditation standards applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provides preparation and leadership during certification and state survey processes and develops action plans for addressing citations as needed.
  • Maintains an acceptable level of professional knowledge and works toward continuously improving standards of care/service.
  • Demonstrates personal leadership by working with Senior Management or appropriate co-workers to manage an improvement in the effectiveness of each assigned organizational committee or group meeting.
  • Provides Orthopedic education to pre-op patients through individual or group sessions to ensure they are prepared for care.
  • Provides leadership oversight for the Clinical Coordinator of Surgical Services at Physicians Regional Health System (PRHS) Perioperative Services, and Orthopedic department staff.
  • Performs PRHS audits and addresses opportunities for improvement through process enhancement or educational initiatives.
  • In the absence of the Executive Director, will provide leadership and decision making as necessary in the interest of patient care.
  • Advises Executive Management Team on best practices in nursing and patient care and acts as a spokesperson for nursing issues.
  • Creates a nursing environment that includes collaboration and integration with other departments.
  • Partners with physicians to establish a safe environment for patients and smooth workflow.
  • Ensures that nursing standards are upheld.
