About The Position

A Registered Nurse who assumes full responsibility for the supervision of the Skilled Nursing/Long Term Care Unit on a 24-hour basis, including all nursing staff and activity staff. This role is responsible for maintaining cost-effective quality care under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and assumes responsibility for the Nursing Department in the absence of the CNO.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse currently licensed in California.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Satisfactory experience as Nurse Manager (minimum 2 years) or previous experience as a House Supervisor preferred.
  • Evidence of skills in leadership, objectivity, integrity, initiative, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Demonstrates interest in improving knowledge, skills, and techniques by furthering education, attendance of appropriate in-service programs, workshops, and independent study.
  • Working knowledge of Title 22 and OBRA regulations for skilled nursing and long-term care units.
  • Experience in working with the aged adult, knowledge of the aging process, excellent assessment skills.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Previous experience as a House Supervisor preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps the CNO informed of reportable situations and nursing unit needs.
  • Participates in selecting, training, scheduling, monitoring, disciplining, and evaluating supervised employees.
  • Demonstrates behavior which actively promotes a harmonious working relationship in the nursing units and other hospital departments.
  • Demonstrates ability to resolve personnel problems encountered in day-to-day functions and refers problems to appropriate resources.
  • Participates in nursing and management staff committee work.
  • Attends management meetings on a regular basis.
  • Maintains high quality of residents' care consistent with individualized care plans.
  • Enforces policies and procedures for Skilled Nursing Facility/Long Term nursing unit and assists in revising when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates behavior which shows understanding of the organization of the hospital and the nursing service.
  • Utilizes an effective method for disseminating general information and written policies and procedures to those under his/her supervision.
  • Collaborate with physicians, pharmacy, therapy, dietary, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate resident care.
  • Ensure appropriate assessment, documentation, and follow-up for resident condition changes.
  • Prepare for and participate in state surveys and audits.
  • Develop corrective action plans as needed.
  • Ensure accurate clinical documentation and adherence to standards of practice.
  • Monitor clinical outcomes and implement performance improvement initiatives.
  • Lead quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
  • Coordinates and monitors the Minimum Data System (MDS) in a timely manner and according to Title 22 and OBRA regulations.
  • Oversees the Resident Assessment Instrument Process and obtains input for all disciplines involved in each resident's care for the care plan.
  • Supports and participates in staff development programs.
  • Obtains medications from the Pharmacy and is responsible for implementing appropriate pharmacy procedure.
  • Maintains compliance with federal state, CMS, OSHA, and facility policies and procedures.
  • Develop staffing schedule to ensure adequate coverage and compliance with staffing requirements.
  • Conducts Skilled Nursing Facility staff meetings.
  • Responsible for addressing performance concerns in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Performs annual Performance Evaluations.
  • Follows all general and departmental safety, security, and health procedures and policies.
  • Utilizes all safe work practices recommended for department.
  • Responsible for the safety of department staff.
  • Orients new employees to hazardous materials, safety, and proper use of equipment.
  • Whenever new substances, processes, equipment, or procedures are introduced, provides proper information and orientation.
  • Provides proper notification for absences and tardiness and is punctual at start of shift.
  • Observes hospital dress code and wears identification badge.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for residents and other nursing staff.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency/disaster situations and response plans.
  • Assists in maintaining equipment assigned to residents' care and reports malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate personnel.
  • Attends mandatory meetings and in-services.
  • Observes safety precautions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must keep all required licenses and certifications current.
  • Completes annual employment health requirements in a timely manner.
  • Follows safe work practices, takes an active interest in preventing injury or illness and promoting a safe and healthful environment for self and others, and complies with Hospital and governmental safety regulations.
  • Must function independently, have personal integrity, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with other personnel, clients, and support agencies.
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks, and moves intermittently during working hours and ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
