About The Position

The Director of Nursing (DON) is a key leadership role at Holton Community Hospital, responsible for building culture, mentoring staff, and advocating for the nursing team. The ideal candidate is an experienced nursing leader who is energetic, optimistic, approachable, and passionate about people. This role involves being visible and engaged with staff, celebrating successes, listening to concerns, and inspiring the nursing team. The DON will shape the future of nursing at the hospital, leading teams across Acute, Swing Bed, Outpatient, Pharmacy, and Emergency Departments. This position requires partnering with physicians, administration, and other leaders to provide exceptional patient care. The successful candidate will be a confident and compassionate leader capable of balancing accountability with encouragement, operational demands with people management, and healthcare challenges with a positive, solutions-oriented attitude. The leadership style sought is one that is present, listens, encourages, celebrates, coaches, holds accountable, and supports growth, bringing warmth, confidence, energy, and authenticity. Requirements

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) License issued by the Kansas State Board of Nursing, or multi-state compact license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or higher.
  • Minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience, including at least two years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and nursing best practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience working in a hospital Emergency Department.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems and healthcare management software.
  • Experience with quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
  • Experience developing, mentoring, and retaining nursing leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and supervises services in the Acute, Swing Bed, Outpatient, Pharmacy, and Emergency Departments.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to supervisory staff, promoting initiative, critical thinking, problem-solving, accountability, and professional development.
  • Interprets and implements new regulations, procedures, and standards.
  • Develops and maintains departmental policies.
  • Coordinates and promotes strong, collaborative relationships among nursing departments, medical staff, patients, families, and the community.
  • Analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services to improve quality of patient care, optimize staffing and resources, and support efficient department operations.
  • Fosters the professional development of nursing staff and creates an environment that promotes engagement, teamwork, accountability, and pride in the nursing profession.
  • Requires a high degree of independent judgment in the interpretation and implementation of organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable laws.
  • Leads, mentors, inspires, and develops nursing staff to ensure excellent patient care and professional growth.
  • Builds and maintains a positive, collaborative, and accountable nursing culture.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates nursing policies, procedures, and standards in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintains a visible leadership presence and regularly engages with nursing staff throughout the organization.
  • Recognizes accomplishments and encourages staff to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinates with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient care delivery and resolve clinical and operational issues.
  • Oversees staffing, scheduling, and budgeting to maintain efficient department operations.
  • Monitors quality assurance programs and patient safety initiatives to improve clinical outcomes.
  • Facilitates ongoing education, professional development, and leadership development opportunities.
  • Supports nurse leaders in coaching, performance management, employee engagement, and staff retention.
  • Serves as a liaison between nursing staff, administration, patients, and families to address concerns and improve satisfaction.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and promotes a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Serves as a positive ambassador for nursing and Holton Community Hospital within the organization and the community.
