The Director of Nursing (DON) is a registered nurse who oversees and supervises the care of all the residents. The DON also provides direct resident/patient care. This role involves the overall management of the entire nursing department and staffing levels, developing and implementing nursing policies and procedures, and ensuring resident safety and respectful treatment. The DON is also responsible for staff training, coordinating pharmacy services, acting as a liaison between the facility, physicians, and family members, and participating in legal proceedings if necessary. The position requires close collaboration with other departments to ensure excellent resident care, managing department budgeting and reporting, staying current on regulation changes, and participating in quality assurance and patient care conferences. Active participation in state surveys and coordination of MDS and care planning are also key responsibilities. The DON conducts employee appraisals, resolves problems, and maintains strict confidentiality of employee and resident information. Direct, hands-on resident care is provided as needed.
