About The Position

The Director of Nursing is responsible for managing key operational systems including Quality, Service Design, Process Design, Location, Layout, People, and Work Systems. This role establishes and monitors Continuous Quality Improvement performance standards. The Director will proactively manage day-to-day scheduling and staffing decisions to ensure optimal coverage and patient care. They will also facilitate the individual development of assigned staff through effective selection, orientation, performance evaluation, interpersonal communication, and coaching. This includes conducting corrective action discussions and writing/reviewing job descriptions. The Director manages direct expenses according to budget, seeks growth opportunities, and manages the revenue cycle. They prepare budgets, evaluate processes for efficiency, and prioritize capital needs. A key focus is on patient satisfaction, addressing concerns, and acting as a change agent for patient-focused care. The role ensures ongoing compliance with licensure, regulatory, and accreditation standards, and provides leadership during survey processes. The Director maintains professional knowledge, supports committees, provides orthopedic education to pre-op patients, and offers leadership oversight for various departments and staff. They perform audits, address improvement opportunities, and provide executive support in the absence of the Executive Director. Additionally, they advise the Executive Management Team on best practices, act as a spokesperson for nursing issues, create a collaborative nursing environment, partner with physicians for patient safety and workflow, and ensure nursing standards are upheld.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Employment.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • 5 – 7 years of experience where the primary function of the position was in a Director of Surgical Services or Patient Care Services or equivalent position in a hospital overseeing basic nursing functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s in Nursing (MSN) is preferred.
  • Surgical services and quality management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Writes and reviews job descriptions on an ongoing basis for those in a reporting relationship.
  • Manages direct expenses in assigned areas according to budgeted level and seeks new growth opportunities that maximize value for the organization.
  • Manages the revenue cycle within area of influence.
  • Updates Senior Management on variances containing qualitative and quantitative analysis with action plans for the next financial period.
  • Prepares budget for areas of responsibility to reflect an increase in value for the patient.
  • Evaluates tasks and processes to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency.
  • Prioritizes capital needs of the organization based upon goals, and technology required for patient care.
  • Focuses on patient satisfaction by investigating and addressing patient concerns.
  • Personally manages the appropriate internal follow-up regarding the concern or complaint.
  • Acts as a change agent for patient focused care in assigned services.
  • Maintains ongoing compliance with licensure, regulatory, and accreditation standards applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provides preparation and leadership during certification and state survey processes and develops action plans for addressing citations as needed.
  • Maintains an acceptable level of professional knowledge and works toward continuously improving standards of care/service.
  • Demonstrates personal leadership by working with Senior Management or appropriate co-workers to manage an improvement in the effectiveness of each assigned organizational committee or group meeting.
  • Provides Orthopedic education to pre-op patients through individual or group sessions to ensure they are prepared for care.
  • Provides leadership oversight for the Clinical Coordinator of Surgical Services at Physicians Regional Health System (PRHS) Perioperative Services, and Orthopedic department staff.
  • Performs PRHS audits and addresses opportunities for improvement through process enhancement or educational initiatives.
  • In the absence of the Executive Director, will provide leadership and decision making as necessary in the interest of patient care.
  • Advises Executive Management Team on best practices in nursing and patient care and acts as a spokesperson for nursing issues.
  • Creates a nursing environment that includes collaboration and integration with other departments.
  • Partners with physicians to establish a safe environment for patients and smooth workflow.
  • Ensures that nursing standards are upheld.
