About The Position

The Director of Nursing - Emergency Center is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, age-appropriate, and cost-effective patient care within a family-centered environment. This role involves leading and participating in Quality Improvement initiatives, mentoring and developing leaders and staff, fostering a positive work environment, and establishing effective partnerships with medical staff, leadership, and cross-functional teams. The Director will also be responsible for developing and executing service line goals aligned with the strategic plan, monitoring financial performance, and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required
  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Business Administration, or a related healthcare field required
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Texas Board of Nursing or valid Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) license required
  • Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience required
  • At least three (3) years of progressive leadership or management experience required
  • Knowledge of patient care delivery models
  • Knowledge of budgeting, financial management, and variance analysis
  • Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies
  • Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., TJC, CMS, THHS)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including word processing and spreadsheet tools
  • Ability to monitor, evaluate, and improve the quality of nursing care
  • Ability to lead staff development and performance management initiatives
  • Ability to facilitate group discussions and drive collaborative decision-making
  • Ability to effectively utilize computer systems and technology

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) certification through the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, age-appropriate, and cost-effective patient care within a family-centered environment.
  • Leads and participates in Quality Improvement initiatives to enhance clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, and patient experience.
  • Mentors and develops leaders and staff to strengthen performance, engagement, and succession planning.
  • Fosters a positive work environment that promotes employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.
  • Identifies and supports ongoing professional development opportunities to ensure consistent, high-level service delivery across teams.
  • Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with medical staff, leadership, and cross-functional teams to achieve organizational and departmental goals.
  • Develops, prioritizes, and executes service line goals aligned with Texas Children’s strategic plan.
  • Monitors and reports financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Prepares and manages annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, including The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and Texas Health and Human Services (THHS).
  • Supports organizational readiness for accreditation by ensuring departmental adherence and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Completes timely and comprehensive performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Ensures new employees complete hospital and departmental orientation within established timeframes.
  • Maintains and updates job descriptions to reflect current roles and responsibilities.
  • Conducts thorough investigations and ensures appropriate follow-up for employee and patient concerns.
  • Develops and submits performance plans, departmental goals, and action plans.
  • Collaborates across departments to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements.
