About The Position

Port Discovery Children's Museum is seeking a passionate and experienced Director of Museum Learning to design, develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for children aged birth to ten. This role involves supervising the Learning Team, providing coaching and mentorship, and leading the development of high-quality, evidence-based learning experiences. The Director will champion playful learning and informal education best practices, ensuring programs are welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all visitors, including those with diverse learning styles, communication needs, and backgrounds. Responsibilities include program design, staff training, ongoing evaluation, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The Director will collaborate with the Senior Director of Learning and Visitor Experience to align all learning experiences with the museum's mission and PLAY Framework.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, museum studies, arts education or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years working with children 0-10 years old.
  • Minimum of 3 years managing the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programming and partnerships.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with diverse, intergenerational audiences, in an energetic, friendly, outgoing, and professional manner.
  • Comfortable engaging with young children and their families one-on-one and in large groups.
  • A passion for learning, play, and fun.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and scheduling skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 3 years training, coaching, mentoring experience.
  • Master's degree in education or related field.
  • Experience working with diverse communities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, and evaluate the museum's educational programs.
  • Serve as the primary supervisor for all Learning Team staff.
  • Establish and maintain standards of performance for the Learning Team.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and evaluation of Learning team staff.
  • Lead the development of high-quality, evidence-based, and child-centered learning experiences for public programs, school and field trip programs, homeschool offerings, summer camp, overnight programs, and community-based initiatives.
  • Champion playful learning and informal education best practices on the museum floor.
  • Engage directly with children and families, modeling exemplary facilitation techniques for staff.
  • Ensure learning experiences are welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all visitors.
  • Reduce barriers to participation and create experiences that support diverse learning styles, communication needs, sensory preferences, cultural backgrounds, and physical abilities.
  • Support the continued growth and development of the Learning Team through observation, coaching, training, and collaborative planning.
  • Foster a culture of reflective practice, curiosity, and continuous improvement within the Learning Team.
  • Ensure all learning experiences align with Port Discovery's mission, PLAY Framework, and commitment to creating meaningful learning through play.
