Our Client is seeking an experienced Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead, coordinate, and oversee the mechanical engineering discipline within its Architecture and Engineering business unit. This senior leadership role will be responsible for engineering operations, project and program management, business development, financial performance, staff development, and client relationships. The Mechanical Engineering team consists of approximately 35 professionals, with the Director managing 6–7 direct reports. The ideal candidate will bring extensive mechanical engineering and A/E/C industry experience, strong leadership capabilities, commercial program experience, and a proven ability to build client relationships and drive business growth. P&L management experience is highly desirable but not required. This position can be performed remotely or from any of the client's offices across North America. Remote candidates should be located within reasonable proximity to a major airport to support business travel as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Minimum of 15 years of mechanical engineering project and/or program management experience within an Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (A/E/C) environment.
  • Minimum of 8 years of supervisory or people-management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting commercial programs, particularly retail, restaurant, or similar multi-site commercial environments.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering consulting and project delivery.
  • Proven ability to manage client relationships, project teams, and multiple concurrent programs.
  • Strong business development and client-facing skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and senior leadership

  • P&L management experience is highly desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Mechanical Engineering consulting process and oversee activities, projects, and personnel within the discipline.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and maintain strong, long-term client relationships.
  • Ensure effective communication with clients and consistently deliver high-quality engineering services.
  • Lead business development initiatives, including marketing functions, industry events, networking activities, and cross-marketing opportunities with other offices.
  • Develop and maintain business development strategies to support growth of the mechanical engineering practice.
  • Participate in sales forecasting and contribute to financial and operational planning.
  • Oversee initial program investigations to evaluate project feasibility, requirements, scope, and resources.
  • Prepare, review, and negotiate proposals and contracts with clients and sub-consultants.
  • Manage and provide leadership to Senior Program Managers and Program Managers.
  • Oversee project and program schedules and ensure timelines are met and effectively communicated to clients.
  • Analyze business and project data to support informed decision-making.
  • Establish and implement best practices aligned with key performance indicators and organizational goals.
  • Mentor, develop, and support engineering and program management staff.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment focused on professional growth and client service.
  • Oversee operational performance and contribute to the financial success of the mechanical engineering team.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across engineering processes, project delivery, and team operations.
  • Perform other duties as required.
