About The Position

The Director of Math & Science designs and implements KIPP SoCal's TK-8 math & science approach, leading math specialists, AD of T&L, science, and coaches to drive equitable, inclusive, and rigorous academic experiences for all students. Through strategic vision-setting, capacity building, and continuous improvement, the Director plans and oversees regional professional development for teachers and leaders aligned to math goals, while overseeing the planning of academic systems and structures to operationalize the academic vision. The Director works collaboratively with the Director of T&L, Director of SpEd, and Director of Schools to support all schools and ensure that math instruction is culturally responsive, evidence-based, and aligned with organizational goals to advance student achievement across all KIPP SoCal schools. The Director of math may lead team wide, cross-content projects that exercises their project management and supports the team in accomplishing yearly goals. This role primarily works inside of our schools. There will also be opportunities to work in our office just south of Downtown LA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • 4-5 years of math and/or science teaching experience; must have active CA Preliminary or CLEAR credential or professional out of state credential
  • 2-3 years of leadership experience as a senior leader on a school team, with experience and results in driving results through others, and the lens of how math and science practices fit into a whole school plan
  • Deep experience with and knowledge best practice research methods for math and science
  • Experience driving outcomes for students of all ability levels and ability to show that evidence in the interview process
  • Critical thinking skills and creativity in building strong systems and structures that support literacy instruction
  • Extensive experience designing and leading professional development and training sessions to a variety of teacher experience levels
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Experience leading and managing teams to drive results
  • A deep passion for social justice, anti-racism work, and equity for all children
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and build relationships across teams and schools

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the AD of Teaching & Learning and Director of Teaching & Learning, the Science Specialist will create and document an inclusive, equitable, and culturally relevant vision for excellence in science
  • Collaborate with the Teaching & Learning team to create the enabling systems to realize the vision
  • Research, recommend, and review curricular and assessment options
  • Lead any adaptation efforts to science curricula to better meet the needs of students (e.g. adjusting lessons / units per the gradual release of responsibility instructional framework).
  • Monitor and lead the creation and adjustment of regional scopes and sequences for science
  • Monitor and, when relevant, lead the creation of regional formative and summative science assessments
  • In collaboration with the Teaching & Learning team, analyze regional science data and create support plans
  • Conduct science observations and walkthroughs in collaboration with the members of the Teaching & Learning team and school site-level instructional leaders.
  • Lead the planning and execution of regional professional development in science
  • Plan and lead professional development at schools in science on an ad hoc or on-going basis based on individual schools’ needs in science
  • Coach and develop specific teachers across schools when needed
  • Collaborate with the Teaching & Learning team to plan and lead content team meetings for science
  • Collaborate with the direct manager to craft a personalized professional learning plan (e.g. text study, workshops, conferences, school visits, etc.) to build knowledge and capacity in science content and teaching and learning instructional methods and practices
  • Collaborate with Teaching & Learning team on general academic projects for the region
  • Drive improved student achievement across all KIPP SoCal TK-8 schools, with each school meeting its established annual math and science goals as measured by interim and summative assessment data.
  • Monitors regional math and science data regularly to identify trends, surface instructional implications, and adjust the regional support strategy accordingly
  • Collaborates with the CAO, Director of T&L, SpEd team, and School Management team to progress monitor data regularly
  • Ensures all math and science related support — including professional development, coaching, and curriculum guidance — is directly connected to closing identified gaps in student achievement
  • Design and maintain a clear, evidence-based, and culturally responsive TK-8 math and science vision that is documented, actively communicated, and used to guide instructional decisions across all KIPP SoCal schools.
  • Develops and maintains a regional math and science vision grounded in KIPP SoCal's anti-racist standards and organizational goals, with clear long-term goals and success metrics
  • Stays current on research and best practices in math and science education — including mathematical practices, language acquisition, and culturally responsive pedagogy — and integrates findings into the regional vision and approach
  • Lead the region-wide implementation of Eureka math and Amplify science, ensuring all schools deliver math instruction with fidelity and in alignment with established regional expectations, as measured by observation and walkthrough data.
  • Oversees the planning and implementation of academic systems and structures that systematize the regional math vision across all schools, including internalization guides, scope and sequences, and data-driven instruction frameworks
  • Monitors implementation fidelity through observations and walkthroughs and adjusts regional support strategies based on findings
  • Leads any curriculum adaptation efforts to better meet the needs of students, ensuring alignment with the gradual release of responsibility framework and KIPP SoCal's equity standards
  • Lead high-quality regional professional development for teachers and school leaders that results in the established percentage of participants demonstrating application of learning in their math instructional practice.
  • Plans and oversees regional PD aligned to math and science goals, ensuring sessions are grounded in evidence-based practices and responsive to school and regional priorities
  • Continuously refines PD design based on participant feedback and observed impact on instruction
  • Lead, develop, and manage the math specialist, AD of T&L, science, and coaching team so that all direct reports meet their established performance goals and demonstrate growth in their role-specific competencies as measured by mid-year and end-of-year performance reviews.
  • Sets clear goals and expectations with direct reports at the start of the year and monitors progress through regular structured check-ins
  • Provides ongoing coaching, targeted feedback, and developmental opportunities that support each team member's growth and effectiveness
  • Completes all performance management responsibilities on time, including 90-day check-ins for new team members and mid-year and end-of-year reviews
