About The Position

Watermill is seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial Director of Marketing to build and lead the company’s marketing function. This newly created role will define how Watermill tells its story, positions its products, and drives awareness, engagement, and adoption across diverse markets and customer segments. Reporting directly to the COO, the Director of Marketing will develop and execute a comprehensive marketing strategy spanning brand, local store marketing (LSM), social media, customer communications, and go-to-market initiatives. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for a strategic “player-coach” who thrives in building from the ground up within a fast-growing, multi-unit retail business.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5–7+ years of progressive marketing experience, ideally as a hands-on generalist within a multi-unit retail, restaurant, convenience, or consumer services environment
  • Exceptional storytelling skills and the ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate to drive consumer engagement
  • B2C & B2B creative mindset
  • Proven experience in go-to-market strategy, positioning and message for food/health or similar products
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate market insights into data-driven marketing strategies
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, contractors, customers, and company management
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both in the written word and verbally, and use e-mail constructively
  • Ability to work independently from written and/or verbal instructions
  • Must pay strong attention to detail and be comfortable in a fast-paced/fast-growing environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or significantly evolving a marketing function is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Establish Watermill’s marketing strategy, brand positioning, and operating cadence. Drive execution while identifying tools, resources, and talent required to scale the function over time (Currently two direct reports.)
  • Define and refine Watermill’s brand narrative and value proposition to resonate with both existing loyal customers and new users across diverse markets
  • Develop, launch, and optimize LSM programs and social media strategies that drive traffic, usage, and engagement at both company-owned locations
  • Lead marketing plans for new market expansions, kiosk launches, product enhancements, and feature rollouts in close partnership with Operations, Development, and Product teams
  • Create compelling, data-driven campaigns that increase awareness, trial, and repeat usage, while reinforcing Watermill’s affordability, convenience, and sustainability benefits
  • Develop tools, content, promotions, and communication programs that support new and existing locations, landlords, and other key stakeholder partners
  • Conduct customer research and competitive analysis to understand usage behavior, regional differences, and emerging trends, translating insights into actionable marketing strategies
  • Build a deep understanding of Watermill customers through data, feedback, and in-market engagement, using insights to influence messaging, programs, and product priorities
  • Partner closely with Operations, Development, Finance, and Product teams to ensure marketing initiatives align with business goals and operational realities
  • Player-coach role with direct supervision of two marketing team members. May oversee agency partners or contract resources as needed. The marketing team is expected to grow as company expansion targets are achieved, and the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and talent-development capabilities.
