About The Position

The Director of Marketing and Communications at Oakland Family Services (OFS) leads strategies that increase awareness of our mission, programs, services, and impact while helping connect our organization with the community. This is an opportunity to shape the OFS brand, lead creative initiatives, build community relationships, and tell stories that make a difference. The Director of Marketing and Communications will provide leadership in the development and implementation of marketing and communications strategies that will increase awareness of Oakland Family Services’ mission, programs, services, brand and achievements. The incumbent will execute communications and marketing strategies using both traditional, electronic, including digital, and social media. The Director of Marketing and Communication will serve as a lead partner in coordinating community outreach and engagement efforts across Oakland Family Services programs. Working closely with program leadership, this position will help identify community needs, develop strategic partnerships, expand community connections, and coordinate outreach activities through relationship-building, networking, and engagement efforts, while ensuring alignment and appropriate coverage across programs and marketing initiatives. The Director of Marketing and Communications will support the goals of the other departments such as, development, human resource programs. The goals should also align with the Agency strategic plan.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication and media or other marketing field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in marketing, communications, advertising, public relations, or a related field in a midsize organization.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience supervising, developing, and leading teams.
  • Must be creative, self-motivated, and detail-oriented, with strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive marketing, public relations, outreach, and public awareness strategies that effectively communicate the organization's mission, programs, and services to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with planning and implementing marketing, community engagement, and outreach initiatives that increase visibility, referrals, enrollment, service utilization, and community awareness.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with community organizations, schools, businesses, healthcare providers, government agencies, funders, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, editing, proofreading, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to effectively represent the agency and collaborate with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Experience utilizing market research, demographic data, community needs assessments, and performance metrics to identify opportunities for growth and evaluate marketing and outreach effectiveness.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, partnerships, initiatives, events, campaigns, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with social media platforms and digital engagement strategies, including Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and emerging platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital, traditional, and social media advertising, media buying, video production, website management, search engine optimization (SEO), and analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience in printing and production processes, including print specifications, file preparation, color management, and vendor coordination.
  • Experience creating, executing, and maintaining strategic marketing plans, communication plans, content strategies, and editorial calendars.
  • Expertise and proficient knowledge of software to be used in the development of print and digital marketing and communications materials, e-mail marketing, website management and analytics, social media, and data collection including: Adobe Creative Cloud software, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere Pro, Content management systems, such as Squarespace, E-mail marketing systems, such as Constant Contact, Office365 applications, Canva, SharePoint and PowerBI, Social media scheduling and data collection software, such as Sprout Social, Google Analytics

Responsibilities

  • Design and produce written and visual materials and other communications that support the goals of the Agency’s strategic plan and all marketing and communications objectives, including but not limited to the following: OFS website (including blog), agency program brochures, flyers and marketing materials, E- newsletters/newsletters, social media platforms.
  • Work with professional advertising and marketing firms to develop effective and professional materials. Design, write, and/or edit collateral materials that include, but are not limited to the following: Annual report, annual holiday appeal materials, display materials for community engagements, resource Directories and materials produced by other organizations, marketing materials used in promotion of agency programs and initiatives.
  • Manages team with all in-house printing and work with print houses to manage all externally completed printing, cutting, binding, etc.
  • Manages social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube or any other media determined to be advantageous in reaching the agency’s key audiences. This includes collateral creation including graphics, videos (both recorded and live) and infographics, scheduling and data collection software (e.g., Sprout Social).
  • Oversees management of the agency’s digital profiles and digital activities including but not limited, Google Business profiles (hours, holidays, services, insurance accepted, etc.), Digital fundraising and promotional campaigns, utilizing paid and earned media, paid and organic social media, e-mail marketing, etc.
  • Manage video creations for the agency. This includes creating content internal using B-roll, interviewing clients, writing scripts, editing and voice overs along with working closely with external videographers and marketing firms for major annual projects.
  • Actively works on securing client testimonials throughout the year, meets with clients, interviews, sets up photo and video shoots, edits, and transcribes documents. Communicates frequently with program staff to identify potential clients and families to participate.
  • Understand the Benevon fundraising model and its implementation at Oakland Family Services and partner with Development staff around communications and marketing materials related to all Development and fundraising functions.
  • Utilizes best practices related to recruitment marketing, in partnership with human resources.
  • Promotes a clear agency brand strategy and Employee Value Proposition (EVP) to assist with attracting qualified candidates to the agency along with promoting OFS as an “Employer of Choice” and “Top Workplace”.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources team to spotlight open positions, write staff testimonials blogs and videos, partners on website content, images, design to assure a strategic story for prospective candidates.
  • Using social media marketing data and statistics, works with team and leadership on analytics, understanding relevant industry topics, gap in industry and among competitors. Uses information to understand and connect with audience and to enhance visual engagement. Produces monthly reports to appropriate depts.
  • Manage the agency’s website, including all page and content design, updates, and creation, ensure search engine optimization visibility and track and analyze all relevant data. Work with leadership and programs on improving content and/or changes aligning with the Strategic Framework goals of the agency.
  • Monitors the agencies e-mail marketing and correspondence, including creation and distribution of regular agency newsletter, program-level newsletters, and other campaign materials.
  • In partnership with the VP of Administrative Services, works closely with the Development Department on annual projects, assisting with coordination, implementation, and planning including for the annual report, annual breakfast event, and other various fundraisers throughout the year. Works on all associated marketing collateral needed for the Department.
  • In partnership with the agency, the media partner develops and fosters media relationships that lead to publicity and media coverage of the Agency and its activities. Alongside program staff, develop opportunities for feature stories, print and broadcast interviews and public service announcements.
  • Initiate frequent print and broadcast media contacts; write and distribute news releases regarding programs, services, special events, volunteer recognition, staff awards and other newsworthy activities.
  • Keeps an organized library of specific program images that are stored, accessible and able to be shared.
  • Works closely with all Agency Departments on various events that occur throughout the year assisting them with understanding timelines, ticket system, and process for requests and ordering of collateral.
  • Coordinates with team members to arrange for photo opportunities that provide favorable images of the agency to be used for social media and recruitment purposes along with keeping an inventory of photos. Tracks all media releases for employees.
  • Leads the agency's community outreach group by facilitating meetings, coordinating outreach plans and event calendars, and partnering with program leadership including Human Resources to identify community events, partnerships, referral networks, and engagement opportunities that support agency visibility, growth, enrollment, utilization, and community impact.
  • In partnership with program leadership, coordinates and supports community outreach and networking efforts to promote agency programs and services. Program staff serve as the primary attendees and representatives at most events, while the Marketing Director provides planning, coordination, promotional support, and outcome evaluation, including tracking attendance, costs, referrals, community engagement, and overall effectiveness to guide future participation.
  • Understands annual budget process, monitors spending throughout the year, forecasts future expenditures and savings, works with leadership on planning, profit/loss margins and variance reports.
  • Provides annual evaluations for team members as directed by leadership.
  • Responsible for incorporating principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in work processes and in job functions. Responsible for promoting a feeling of welcoming, belonging, and acceptance to all clients and staff.
