About The Position

The Director of Legal Quality exists to ensure that every appeal filed carries the weight of a Veteran's future and is never taken lightly. This role is for a meticulous legal thinker who finds purpose in elevating writing and holding advocacy to an uncompromising standard. The Director of Legal Quality will build and continuously improve Berry Law's legal quality management system to ensure appeals submitted to the VA are legally accurate, factually supported, professionally written, strategically persuasive, and consistently reflect the firm's standards of excellence. This role is responsible for reporting defects, identifying systemic quality issues, improving attorney performance through writing skills training, and ensuring Berry Law produces the highest-quality veterans disability advocacy in the country.

Requirements

  • Licensed attorney
  • 5+ years appellate or litigation experience
  • Exceptional legal writing ability

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent quality reviews of randomly selected appeals.
  • Review all appeals from new attorneys for the first 15 days after they graduate from the training platoon.
  • Ensure compliance with Berry Law's Quality Standards.
  • Prevent critical defects before filing.
  • Analyze every defect found during audits to determine the root cause (knowledge, workflow, template, training, AI, supervision).
  • Report defects to the VA commander for corrective actions.
  • Conduct Quarterly legal writing workshops, appellate advocacy training, and calibration exercises.
  • Maintain QC Standards, QC Scorecards, Defect Database, Writing Guides with Examples, Approved Authority Library, Template Library, and AI Prompt Library (FUTURE).
  • Review and report on precedential cases and update the above as necessary.
  • Ensure Berry Law writing is concise, accurate, persuasive, professional, easy to read, and strategically organized.
  • Ensure every significant defect receives root cause analysis, corrective action, owner, deadline to fix (when feasible), and a report to the VA Commander and assigned Platoon Leader.
  • Maintain dashboards showing defect rates, recurring defects, attorney trends, department trends, and quality improvement over time.
  • Conduct weekly audits of appeals and appeal forms.
  • Conduct monthly audits of templates, AI output, and SOP compliance.
