About The Position

As a Director of Engineering (Udacity), you’ll manage a team of talented software engineers responsible for the Infrastructure of Udacity software stack. The infrastructure team provides our PaaS solution, operations, engineering tooling, and building out core services used throughout all of our products. Engineering Services plays a critical role in enabling the delivery, modernization, and scalability of enterprise technology platforms. The team partners closely with product, delivery, and client teams to design, build, standardize, and support high quality engineering solutions across the full lifecycle—from initial design through implementation, optimization, and ongoing support. Engineering Services professionals provide hands on technical expertise, establish and enforce engineering standards and patterns, develop reusable assets and accelerators, and support platform migrations, integrations, and continuous improvement initiatives. This includes enabling robust CI/CD pipelines, ensuring adherence to architectural and quality standards, and supporting the adoption of modern engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 4 years in a formal team lead or engineering manager role building reliable, maintainable, and scalable systems
  • Minimum 5 years working in a DevOps environment with direct ownership of CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, or site reliability functions
  • Minimum 5 years managing remote or distributed teams of 4+ engineers
  • Minimum 5 years experience with at least two major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) at an architecture or principal level
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent (minimum 12 years) work experience. (If Associate Degree, must have minimum 6 years work experience)

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience within large strategic client accounts strongly preferred
  • Previous professional services/management consulting experience

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with delivery and engineering teams to strengthen AI engineering rigor, governance, and operationalization
  • Plan, own and execute technical projects in an organized fashion amongst a remote team.
  • Run a fast-paced team leveraging AI development in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Mentor Engineers to help them grow their careers
  • Improve our microservice architecture to fit the needs of the business as it changes.
  • Own complex architecture, delivering a highly reliable a product suite
  • Own core services and capabilities, e.g. Auth(n), Auth(z), SSO, data layers, and eventing layer
  • Manage the security and compliance programs
  • Constantly grow and learn to further your own knowledge base.
