About The Position

The General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) invites applications for the position of Director of Human Resources. This role provides strategic and operational leadership for all HR functions through a shared-services model supporting GCFA and its affiliated ministries. The Director ensures that people practices align with the organization’s faith-based mission, values, and legal responsibilities. In addition, the Director serves as a senior HR consultant to affiliated entities, advising leaders on workforce strategy, compliance, compensation, employee relations, and organizational effectiveness. The position also oversees benefits administration, including health and welfare plans for employees and retirees of UMC-related entities. The ideal candidate brings strategic HR leadership experience and a deep commitment to supporting mission-driven organizations. GCFA serves The United Methodist Church through financial and administrative ministries that enable the fulfillment of the mission of the Church. The HR Department provides comprehensive support to multiple denominational agencies, annual conferences, and affiliated ministries across the United States and globally, as well as additional support to other UMC entities as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, or related field is required.
  • 7-9 years of progressive HR leadership experience is required.
  • Previous benefits and human resource management experience is required.
  • Strong knowledge of employment law, compensation design, and organizational development.
  • High level of emotional intelligence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and a strong commitment to ethical decision-making.
  • Proven ability to navigate conflict effectively, including experience with mediation and resolution strategies.
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn UMC polity and organizational structure is essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Professional HR certification (SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or equivalent) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations is preferred.
  • Basic accounting skills required given the significant components of human resources and benefits in the overall budget.
  • UMC Member is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department, including recruitment, performance management, compensation administration, staff development, and implementation of personnel policies.
  • Provide strategic HR support in employee relations, communication, compliance, and payroll operations.
  • Lead a centralized HR consulting function serving multiple affiliated organizations, delivering expertise in employee relations and conflict resolution, compensation and benefits guidance, performance management and coaching, policy development and compliance, talent acquisition and succession planning.
  • Responsible for building service-level agreements, operating standards, and performance metrics for client organizations.
  • Implement and manage The General Agencies of the United Methodist Church (GAUMC) benefits program as designed by the Committee on Personnel Policies and Practices (CPPP) and approved by GCFA to provide the best, most cost effective medical, dental, life and disability insurance benefits.
  • Administer and oversee all employee leave programs, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, short and long-term disability, and other paid leave programs. Ensure accurate documentation, vendor coordination, compliance, and compassionate return-to-work planning. Manage the interactive processes for medical and accommodation-related leave.
  • Resource and support the Committee on Personnel Policies and Practices (CPPP) and its subcommittees, including providing policy guidance and facilitating job grading and position review processes.
  • Ensure all employment practices comply with federal, state, and denominational requirements, reducing organizational risk through consistent policy application and documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
