About The Position

Under limited supervision, the Director of Grants and Foundation Relations researches, writes, formats, and submits compelling, high-quality grant proposals and reports to funding agencies, including federal, local, foundation, and corporate grantmakers. The role also assists with cultivating and stewarding individual and corporate donors in support of the Zoo’s Foundation, Capital Campaign, and other fundraising programs. The Director works closely with the Development team to align efforts and set goals, and reports to the Vice President of Development. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires time worked in excess of forty hours per week. The position may require evening and weekend work.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in fundraising, grant writing, communications, or a related field.
• Three to five years of experience in fundraising, marketing, communications, or grant writing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excellent research, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently throughout the grant-writing, preparation, submission, follow-up, and reporting process.
• Excellent phone skills and the ability to ask for and acquire donations.
• Attention to detail and deadlines.
• Ability to work effectively with internal staff.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by the fleet insurance carrier.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

• Research, write, format, and submit grant proposals and reports to federal, local, foundation, and corporate funding agencies.
• Prepare grant application packages, manage submissions and follow-up, and complete final grant reports.
• Assist with cultivation and stewardship of individual and corporate donors supporting the Zoo’s Foundation, Capital Campaign, and other fundraising programs.
• Work effectively with internal staff to obtain information needed for grant applications and final reports.
• Use fundraising information sources and make calls to request and secure donations.
• Collaborate with the Development team to align efforts and set goals.
