About The Position

As Director of Finance, you will help shape MRC's future by connecting financial strategy with our mission. The Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and hands-on oversight of MRC's finance department and financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, payroll oversight, program data, internal controls, and risk management. As a member of the leadership team, this position partners with the CEO and department leaders to evaluate opportunities, anticipate financial needs, and support informed decisions in a fast-paced, changing organization. The Director translates complex financial information into clear recommendations, strengthens financial systems and processes, and balances growth initiatives with fiscal responsibility. This role requires a proactive leader who can move between long-range planning and daily operations, manage competing priorities, and guide the finance team through organizational change while maintaining accuracy, accountability, and compliance.

  • Valid Michigan driver's license and Michigan auto insurance.
  • Must also successfully pass a comprehensive financial/credit background check and criminal history verification as a condition of employment.
  • 3-5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including a minimum of 3 years of supervisory, team management, or finance function leadership experience.
  • Minimum of five years of accounting experience and advanced working knowledge of accounting systems for an organization with a complex funding structure and a budget of at least $5,000,000 required.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with financial forecasting, program or contract cost analysis, and supporting organizational decisions preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the CEO and leadership team on long-range planning, organizational goals, and financial strategies that support MRC's mission and sustainable growth.
  • Evaluate the financial impact of proposed programs, funding opportunities, operational changes, and capital investments.
  • Develop and implement goals for finance and assigned support services that align with organizational priorities.
  • Anticipate financial risks, resource needs, and operational challenges; recommend timely, practical solutions.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, coaching, and development for finance staff, establishing clear expectations and accountability.
  • Guide the finance department through changing priorities, new systems, and process improvements while maintaining reliable daily operations.
  • Establish performance measures and use financial and operational data to evaluate results and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Build collaborative relationships with department leaders and help them understand budgets, financial performance, and the implications of their decisions.
  • Recommend financial policies and develop procedures that strengthen consistency, efficiency, and internal controls.
  • Support the MRC Board of Directors Finance Committee with clear financial reporting, analysis, and recommendations.
  • Provide financial leadership for agency initiatives and special projects.
  • Develop, direct, and maintain accounting systems in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), MRC policies, and contractual requirements.
  • Oversee accounting operations and ensure accurate, timely monthly financial statements are prepared and presented to the CEO, Board Finance Committee, and leadership team.
  • Explain financial results, budget variances, emerging trends, and recommended actions in a manner that supports informed decisions.
  • Prepare and supervise financial, statistical, and program reports, ensuring data accuracy and usefulness.
  • Prepare or coordinate fiscal reports required by funding agencies, insurers, and applicable federal and state requirements.
  • Lead the annual operating and capital budget process in collaboration with the CEO and leadership team.
  • Monitor budget performance throughout the year and update forecasts as funding, program needs, and organizational priorities change.
  • Analyze program and contract costs, overhead allocations, production costs, and financial sustainability.
  • Monitor cash flow, banking activity, and cash balances to support operating needs and planned investments.
  • Oversee payroll processing; review and approve payroll and related reports for accuracy and compliance.
  • Coordinate the annual audit and ensure supporting documentation and required follow-up are completed.
  • Establish, review, and strengthen internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and reduce financial risk.
  • Prepare financial information for grant applications, funding requests, financing opportunities, and other organizational needs.
  • Coordinate liability insurance coverage, policy renewals, and related risk management activities.
  • Ensure financial operations and assigned functions meet applicable CARF, MDHHS, Medicaid, DOL, OSHA, and other local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Evaluate financial systems, reporting tools, and workflows to ensure they can support increasing organizational complexity and growth.
  • Lead systems analysis and improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, and access to useful financial information.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and reduce unnecessary manual work.
  • Collaborate across departments to improve the quality and timeliness of financial and program data.
  • Support implementation of new systems and procedures through clear communication, staff training, and follow-through.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and complete other duties as assigned by the CEO.
