About The Position

The Director of Finance is responsible for leading the Friendship Shelter’s finance department’s day-to-day activities and the supervision, training, and development of the accounting team. This individual is responsible for all aspects of financial management, including accounting, financial reporting, and the development of internal control policies and procedures. This individual is also responsible for managing the Organization’s financial transactions, producing reports regarding those transactions, and reconciling all accounts to ensure their accuracy. This position will work closely with the Organization’s third-party contracted accounting firm and will be a member of the Executive Team. About Us: Friendship Shelter is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization, founded in 1988 to provide year-round shelter and rehabilitation to homeless adults. Today, we offer a full complement of services to the most vulnerable homeless people in our community. We are focused on finding the most appropriate permanent housing solution for each individual.

Requirements

  • Exceptional knowledge of financial and accounting practices.
  • Ability to lead a team to accomplish department and organizational goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated computer software competencies, especially QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
  • Minimum of six years of experience in an accounting role.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with non-profit accounting, grants, and government contract management required.
  • Bachelor’s or more advanced degree or professional licenses/certifications in accounting or finance, or comparable work experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in non-profit housing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead finance department, managing staff and representing the department to internal and external constituencies.
  • Stay up to date on non-profit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding non-profit operations; comply with all laws and regulations regarding financial functions and ensure the Organization is in legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
  • Ensure all financial reports and departments follow generally accepted accounting principles and all local, state, and federal government reporting/tax processes.
  • Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances.
  • Coordinate the preparation of annual tax returns and supporting paperwork with an outside CPA partner. Ensure audit compliance throughout the year and work with external auditors on the annual audit.
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, training, and monitoring systems to ensure all Finance activities are delivered per contract requirements.
  • Cultivate relationships with staff that inspire and motivate and communicate openly with all internal stakeholders
  • Coordinate internal and external audits
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Manage cashflow in order to support organizational operations
  • Oversee grant budgeting, tracking, reporting, and compliance.
  • Ensure proper allocation and restriction of funds in accordance with donor and grantor requirements
