About The Position

Under the direction of the CFO, the Director of Finance oversees the Finance department and is responsible for reporting on the financial health of Tla’amin Nation and providing support on its strategic direction. Financial reporting, team mentorship and collaboration with other departments are vital elements in the Finance team’s contribution to the ongoing evolution of Tla’amin Nation.

Requirements

  • Professional Accounting designation (CPA) and a university degree.
  • 10 years’ experience in a full-cycle accounting environment.
  • 5+ years of experience in a management role.
  • Acceptable Driving Record and valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Acceptable Police Information Check prior to employment.
  • Well-developed leadership and people management skills, including the ability to promote change with a high level of energy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, including Word, Outlook, Teams, and intermediate to advanced level Excel skills.
  • Recent experience using Sage Intacct.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders using both verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent technical bookkeeping and analytical skills.
  • Highly organized.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Customer service oriented to respond quickly, accurately, and effectively to internal and external inquiries and non-routine problems.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin laws, regulations, policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Chief Financial Officer. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to Citizens, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation.
  • Lead the month-end close process to ensure all accounting and financial recording and reporting is complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Lead the review of monthly internal financial statements and variance analysis prior to the distribution of department reports.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and KPI reports for Senior Management, Finance Committee, and Executive Council.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on technical accounting issues per GAAP.
  • Keep up to date with accounting changes and industry developments to ensure finance and accounting practices are up to date. Draft technical topic memos, as required.
  • On an ongoing basis, ensure the Administration and Finance Policy is reflective of actual financial policies and that procedures are updated to ensure that appropriate internal controls are in place.
  • Implement and oversee an internal controls framework to promote transparency, mitigate risks, and ensure compliance with Administration and Finance Policy.
  • Lead the annual audit process, particularly around complex areas involving significant judgments and estimates.
  • Lead the preparation of the annual financial statements and notes.
  • Assess and analyze the financial impact of potential transactions, ensuring compliance with accounting policies and standards.
  • Support the CFO to develop and maintain banking and insurance business relationships.
  • Provide technical accounting training to finance and accounting teams, ensuring a strong understanding of accounting principles and compliance requirements.
  • Forecast cash flow requirements and if required manage short-term liquidity needs considering working capital and capital project expenditures.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to the CAO, CFO, and Executive Council in the approval of strategies and scenario analysis for sustainable treasury management.
  • Develop treasury reporting dashboards and KPIs appropriate for various stakeholders
  • Ensure appropriate policies, procedures and guidance are in place related to treasury matters that support an appropriate internal control framework
  • Responsible for hiring, orientation, supervision and training of direct reports - Accounting Operations Supervisor and Senior Accountant. Oversee accounts receivable and payable.
  • Conducts regular performance planning and review with employees, providing feedback and managing performance as required.
  • Participate in and lead the development and implementation of strategies that build Finance capacity and bandwidth, provide excellence in customer service, and optimize the well-being of the Finance department.
  • Participate in annual planning of short- and long-term resource requirements and department budgets.
  • Manage the financial affairs of the Department. Monitor, track and reconcile expenditures to approved budgets identifying variances and needs for planned revisions.
  • Participates as a collaborative member of the Senior Management Team. Communicates a positive future for the Tla’amin Nation in ways that gain the support of employees, community and external partners.
