About The Position

Trails Have Our Respect (THOR) is seeking a Director of Finance & Human Resources to serve as the strategic financial anchor, compliance leader, and human resources engine supporting the organization's growing team, programs, project portfolio, and day-to-day operations. This role works closely with the Executive Director, ensuring financial integrity, GAAP compliance, and administrative excellence. The Director will lead THOR’s modern, cloud-native financial ecosystem, including QuickBooks Online Advanced Accounting, Mercury Plus Banking, Charles Schwab Investing, and Gusto Plus Payroll. Responsibilities include bridging high-level strategy (multi-program labor allocation, cash flow forecasting, investment monitoring, audit leadership) with hands-on execution (general ledger management, payroll processing, inter-account transfers, vendor bill pay). The role also involves maintaining a system of dual financial controls and internal checks for transparency and trust with the Board of Directors, partners, and fiscally sponsored programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or closely related field.
  • Minimum 5–7+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, including at least 3+ years in non-profit fund accounting (GAAP / FASB ASC 958).
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing full-cycle accounting—from day-to-day transactional entry and payroll to month-end close, financial statement preparation, and annual audit leadership.
  • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online (QBO Advanced preferred), including multi-class, multi-location, and project-based tracking.
  • Direct experience managing full-cycle payroll, employee benefit plans, and HR compliance for 15+ benefited employees (Gusto experience strongly preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with modern cloud financial tools (e.g., Mercury, Bill Pay, digital expense management, Google Workspace).
  • Strong analytical acumen paired with authentic, clear, and professional written and verbal communication skills (writing without reliance on generative AI).

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional (CNAP).
  • Experience in construction job costing, heavy civil equipment tracking, or municipal reimbursable contract accounting.
  • Experience managing accounting for fiscally sponsored entities or chapter-based non-profit organizations.
  • A professional, approachable, and ethical demeanor grounded in transparency and stewardship.
  • Self-motivation and accountability paired with collaborative teamwork.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail.
  • A clear ability to manage their own time, balance multiple priorities, and consistently meet deadlines with calm efficiency.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, learning, and innovation.
  • Enthusiasm for outdoor recreation, community health, conservation, and THOR’s regional trail mission.

Responsibilities

  • Full-Cycle Accounting & Multi-Dimensional Ledger Management (QBO): Master General Ledger Ownership, Multi-Dimensional Tracking, Accounts Payable & Bill Pay, Accounts Receivable & Invoicing, Fixed Asset & Fleet Accounting.
  • Treasury Management & Banking Operations: Working Capital & Cash Replenishment, Treasury Oversight, Bank Reconciliations, Expense & Corporate Card Administration.

  • Audit, Compliance, Risk Management & Board Governance: Annual Audit & Form 990 Leadership, Board Governance & Reporting, Insurance & Risk Management, Internal Controls Stewardship.

Benefits

  • Subsidized health, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance
  • 5% direct employer 403(b) retirement contribution (no employee match required)
