About The Position

Community Bible Study (CBS) is an interdenominational Bible study for the community. We offer a wide range of courses in classes around the world, with over 1.3 million participants in 126 countries, 101 languages (and counting!), and 77,000 dedicated volunteers. The Director of Finance and Accounting is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the ministry in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and other regulatory and advisory organizations, and in accordance with non-profit financial management techniques and best practices appropriate to the size, nature, world-wide reach, and complexity of Community Bible Study. The Director works in a collaborative partnership with team members and ministry leadership, at all levels, and in the context of the CBS culture and values, to achieve the goals of the ministry.

Requirements

  • Deep and growing relationship with Jesus Christ, as evidenced by a strong, clear personal testimony and a lifestyle that reflects spiritual maturity and intimacy with God.
  • Belief in and adherence to the CBS Statement of Faith, and a meaningful commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of CBS.
  • 6-8 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience (nonprofit experience preferred).
  • At least 3 years of experience managing international financial transactions.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in fund accounting principles, financial systems, and reporting methodologies.
  • Proven project management experience, with the ability to define scope, manage timelines, and track strategic initiatives to completion.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a global ministry of employees and volunteer leaders.
  • High level of technical proficiency with Microsoft Office and financial systems, including accounting, donor management, and expense platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to independently manage workload and follow through on assignments accurately and efficiently.
  • Experience implementing or reengineering scalable financial processes and supporting technologies.
  • Ability to lead through change and support organizational strategic initiatives.
  • Strong business acumen with sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
  • Self-starter who demonstrates initiatives and proactively identifies opportunities for improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed CPA; a strong plus
  • NetSuite experience is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with or prior involvement in Community Bible Study (CBS) as a leader or class member is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, communicate, support, develop, and inspire the finance/accounting team.
  • Manage the financial/accounting systems, continually innovating to ensure the systems meet the needs of the ministry efficiently and effectively.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies into financial systems and processes, applying thoughtful implementation and appropriate experimentation.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate policy and procedure statements for all CBS financial functions.
  • Oversee month-end close, including reconciliations and timely, accurate reporting.
  • Prepare and review ministry financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow) in accordance with GAAP.
  • Maintain oversight of the general ledger and chart of accounts to support consistent reporting and ministry decision-making.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of financial processes, policies, financial literacy, and financial competence throughout the ministry.
  • Ensure the ministry follows all internal financial policies and relevant regulations, and ensure filings are completed in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls, including appropriate approval workflows and segregation of duties.
  • Oversee the annual external audit, review, and analyze results, and recommend for approval.
  • Manage all required financial filings (5500, 990, etc.), ensuring that filings are accurate and timely.
  • Ensure appropriate revenue recognition and accurate tracking/reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Oversee grant-related financial compliance and reporting, as applicable.
  • Work with all internal constituents to ensure that donations are handled legally, accurately, and ethically.
  • In cooperation with the CBS Field Ministry, ensure that international financial transactions are accomplished in a timely manner, in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Seeking opportunities to connect and learn with finance leaders from like-minded non-profits.
  • Ensure finance systems are reviewed, gaps identified, and new solutions are recommended to maintain systems at appropriate levels to support the growing global ministry.
  • Maintain primary contact with the Evangelical Council on Financial Accountability, ensuring compliance with all requirements and successful completion of the annual ECFA audit.
  • Develop a cash flow projection and reporting process that meets ministry operating needs.
  • Optimize the handling of bank and deposit relationships and cash management strategies.
  • Maintain oversight of treasury activities, including banking access, funds movement, and appropriate approvals.
  • Develop and prepare appropriate monthly and quarterly ministry visibility (reports, dashboards), including results and analysis, for all levels of the ministry.
  • Deliver clear, timely financial reporting for ministry leadership and the Board of Trustees, including a consistent reporting cadence and variance insights.
  • In cooperation with ministry leaders, design, improve, and lead the annual budget process.
  • Provide regular forecasting and variance reporting to support timely decisions and stewardship.
  • Provide financial modeling and analysis expertise as needed.
  • Provide technical and strategic financial leadership, establishing credibility throughout the ministry and with the Board of Trustees (and subcommittees thereof) as an effective listener and collaborative developer of solutions to ministry challenges.
