About The Position

The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to creating a fair and inclusive financial marketplace. CRL focuses on research, legal analysis, policy development, and advocacy to promote economic equity, particularly for underserved communities like Black and brown communities and low-to-middle income families. The organization works to expand family wealth and financial stability through sustainable homeownership, affordable higher education, and support for small businesses, while also protecting families from predatory products and practices such as payday lending, exorbitant bank fees, and abusive debt collection. CRL is an affiliate of Self-Help, a community development lender.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience at increasingly senior levels, ideally in a similar position with demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and direct a comprehensive, innovative, and strategic policy program.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, families of modest means, communities of color, and experience in racial justice analysis and understanding of how federal/state/local policies contributed to and sustained racial wealth disparities.
  • Passion for CRL’s mission; interest and commitment to social justice work.

Nice To Haves

  • Juris doctorate (JD) degree and/or a master’s degree in Public Policy or related fields.
  • Experience with consumer financial laws.
  • Experience in civil rights, housing/mortgage lending, predatory lending, consumer law, or banking law.
  • Experience and skill at building relationships with external partners and cultivating collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Represent CRL at external functions, including events beyond typical office hours.
  • Coordinate with other organizations and coalitions involved in CRL issues.
  • Build relationships with coalition and industry partners, attend coalition meetings, or identify appropriate staff to attend.
  • Serve as a spokesperson on various topics in the media and on Capitol Hill.
  • Supervise federal policy staff, setting goals, providing feedback, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Develop and implement professional development plans for team members.
  • Model inclusive behavior, build cultural humility, and support staff DE&I development.
  • Provide strategy leadership and insight into federal opportunities and threats, and help prioritize workplans.
  • Provide feedback on issue plans, their revision and implementation, and monitor their demands on federal policy.
  • Ensure appropriate coverage of workgroup issues by assigning tasks to team members.
  • Work with leadership to ensure adequate coverage from the federal team or identify resource needs.
  • Lead CRL’s strategy efforts to advance legislative and regulatory agendas at the federal level.
  • Monitor and analyze proposed federal legislation and regulations to support CRL’s policy positions.
  • Lead technical assistance in drafting federal legislation or regulatory proposals.
  • Oversee Capitol Hill and federal regulatory activities.
  • Review and advise on coalition sign-on letters.
  • Convene regular meetings of the federal policy team to coordinate and prioritize activities.
  • Participate with senior leadership in broad strategy discussions regarding federal policy.
  • Track federal policy team activities and report on them for board and funder reports, inter-organization communication, and initiative effectiveness evaluation.
  • Participate in or lead issue work groups and craft policy approaches, including research and writing.
  • Support CRL litigation work, including amicus briefs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with outside partners on litigation matters.
  • Ensure compliance with Congressional and IRS lobbying reporting requirements.
  • Advance CRL and Self-Help’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals.
  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.
