About The Position

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), an initiative of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, focuses on sustainable and lasting public health change through policy change campaigns and capacity building in low and middle-income countries. Drawing on lessons from tobacco control and other public health advocacy campaigns in over 50 countries, GHAI drives policy change globally to improve health. The Director of Federal Advocacy for Overdose Prevention will oversee the development and execution of GHAI's federal advocacy agenda. This role involves engaging with decision-makers in the Legislative and Executive Branches to promote policies that enhance addiction treatment systems, remove barriers to care, and reduce disparities. The position aims to expand access to affordable, evidence-based addiction treatment and overdose prevention strategies in seven states by advancing policy change and public awareness, and by educating federal decision-makers about the overdose crisis and effective policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 10+ years legislative and/or issue advocacy experience.
  • Knowledge of the federal legislative process.
  • Knowledge of tobacco or health policy issues.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with only general supervision.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling and coordinating multiple projects and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Lobby Congressional offices on a range of overdose prevention issues.
  • Analyze legislation and draft policy and advocacy materials such as correspondence to Members of the House and Senate and short position papers on a range of overdose-related issues.
  • Monitor bill introductions, congressional hearings, committee mark-ups, and floor debates.
  • Manage government affairs consultants.
  • Draft talking points, joint letters and other materials to be used in grassroots and grass tops activities and meetings in districts and states.
  • Participate in meetings with key partner organizations.
  • Maintain daily collaboration with the Associate Vice President of Overdose Prevention.
  • Monitor and assist in responding to substance use-related policies and regulations proposed by executive branch agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President of Overdose Prevention.
