UT Health Athens UT Health Athens is a 127-bed facility located in Henderson County, Texas. UT Health Athens is the second largest hospital in the UT Health East Texas system. The hospital features a 24-hour emergency department, designated as a Level IV trauma center and acute stroke ready facility with surgical suites including five operating rooms and two suites dedicated to GI procedures; advanced diagnostic technology; 10-bed ICU; maternity unit featuring eight LDRP suites; radiation therapy center; and a stand-alone emergency department in neighboring Gun Barrel City. POSITION SUMMARY: The Facilities Director provides strategic and operational leadership for facilities planning, construction, maintenance, and plant operations across the health system. This role oversees capital projects from early concept through completion, coordinating with architects, designers, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to deliver safe, compliant, and functional facilities. The Facilities Director directs all building maintenance, repairs, and utility systems, ensuring optimal performance of HVAC, medical gas, boiler, electrical, and plumbing systems. The position leads daily facilities operations, supervises assigned staff, sets work schedules, and resolves complex operational issues. Through strong communication and decision-making, the Facilities Director ensures regulatory compliance, patient and staff safety, and efficient, reliable facility operations that support clinical and business needs.

Requirements

  • High School (or GED equivalent) diploma.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Eight plus years of Facilities Management experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities, Engineering or Equivalent.
  • Previous hospital based supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning, scheduling, and supervising physical plant operations and employees at assigned UT Health East Texas regional and satellite facilities.
  • Supervises and directs facilities staff, including mechanics, maintenance technicians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, electricians, painters, and carpenters. Establishes work procedures, priorities, and schedules to support efficient operations.
  • Oversees staff training and performance. Addresses personnel issues and escalates matters to the Director of Plant Services as appropriate. Mentors, coaches, and develops employees to achieve departmental and organizational goals.
  • Manages daily plant operations, ensuring reliable operation of building systems, equipment, and utilities.
  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees designated capital planning, design, and construction projects. Assists with presentations and recommendations to administrative and leadership groups.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable safety, regulatory, accreditation, and code requirements. Maintains required records in accordance with State and TJC standards.
  • Performs and oversees preventive maintenance, inspections, calibration, testing, and repairs of mechanical and electrical equipment. Diagnoses system malfunctions and completes complex repairs as needed.
  • Responds to and documents emergency repair requests; ensures timely resolution and restoration of services.
  • Trains staff in the operation, maintenance, and repair of facility equipment and systems.
  • Assists with requisitioning parts, materials, and supplies. Reviews and authorizes purchase requests within assigned limits. May participate in evaluating new equipment.
  • Participates in departmental, professional, and hospital committees. Serves as a liaison or consultant for facilities-related matters.
  • Communicates daily with internal customers, department leadership, outside vendors, and service organizations regarding service needs, project status, and operational issues.
  • Delivers responsive customer service and collaborates effectively with supervisors, peers, and other departments.
  • Assists in developing departmental policies, procedures, strategies, and goals aligned with organizational direction. Provides functional leadership to assigned personnel.
  • Contributes to operating and capital budget development and is accountable for meeting budget targets within assigned areas.
  • Takes ownership of special projects, pilot programs, and other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.
