The Director of Facilities and Maintenance provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for the operation, maintenance, safety, cleanliness, functionality, sustainability, and continuous improvement of all Lynchburg City Schools facilities, grounds, custodial operations, warehouse services, construction projects, equipment, and related support services. The Director is responsible for ensuring that school division facilities support safe, healthy, efficient, sustainable, and well-maintained learning and working environments for students, staff, and visitors while promoting responsible stewardship of public resources and division assets. The Director develops, implements, and evaluates short- and long-range facilities plans; oversees preventive and corrective maintenance programs; manages capital improvement and construction projects; and ensures the effective stewardship, preservation, and sustainability of division facilities, infrastructure, equipment, and physical assets. This position is responsible for the administration of departmental budgets, procurement activities, contracts, and resource allocation, ensuring expenditures, purchasing processes, vendor payments, and financial reporting are completed accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner while maintaining fiscal responsibility and accountability. The Director provides leadership and supervision for facilities, maintenance, custodial, warehouse, and related personnel; establishes performance expectations; promotes professional development; and fosters a culture of safety, service excellence, accountability, sustainability, and continuous improvement throughout the department. This position monitors facility conditions and operational impacts related to weather events, utility disruptions, environmental hazards, and other emergencies. The Director assists with assessing road conditions, facility accessibility, infrastructure concerns, and operational readiness during inclement weather and emergency situations and provides timely recommendations to support division decision-making, continuity of operations, and the safety and well-being of students and staff. The Director works collaboratively with school administrators, division leadership, transportation staff, public safety agencies, contractors, architects, engineers, regulatory agencies, and community partners to coordinate facility operations, construction activities, emergency response efforts, and capital improvement initiatives. The Director ensures timely, professional, and effective communication regarding facility issues, maintenance priorities, operational impacts, project status, safety concerns, and emergency situations affecting schools and division operations. The Director promotes and advances facility safety, environmental responsibility, energy efficiency, sustainability initiatives, and long-term asset management strategies that support operational effectiveness and responsible stewardship of public resources. The Director ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, building codes, environmental requirements, safety standards, and division policies while supporting a safe, resilient, and sustainable educational environment. This position prepares reports, analyses, recommendations, and presentations regarding facilities operations, capital projects, budgets, asset management, sustainability initiatives, and strategic planning efforts and serves as a key advisor to division leadership on matters related to facilities management, operational efficiency, infrastructure stewardship, and long-term capital planning.
