About The Position

The Director of Estimating will lead the estimating team while shaping the company’s growth strategy through disciplined pursuit planning, strong processes, and team development. This role involves building, mentoring, and managing a high-performing estimating department focused on accuracy, consistency, and collaboration. The Director will develop, maintain, and refine estimating SOPs, standards, and workflows, oversee bid strategies, pursuit planning, and go/no-go decisions to ensure profitable and competitive opportunities. They will guide the preparation of detailed cost models, scopes of work, and purchasing goals, and manage resources effectively to balance workload, capacity, and employee well-being. Additionally, the Director will lead the implementation and optimization of estimating software, databases, and emerging technologies, collaborate with various departments, oversee subcontractor and vendor engagement, and provide estimating insight for recruiting and talent development. The role also includes serving as an ambassador for the company through industry involvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or 15+ years of progressive experience in commercial construction estimating.
  • Demonstrated success leading, developing, and mentoring estimating teams to perform at a high level.
  • Strong understanding of construction means and methods, cost modeling, and estimating software to deliver accurate and competitive bids.
  • Strategic mindset for pursuits and growth, grounded in execution details and day-to-day realities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and negotiation skills to align stakeholders and drive informed decisions.
  • Comfortable making high-impact decisions in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments with confidence and professionalism.
  • Hungry, humble, and people-smart.

Responsibilities

  • Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing estimating department focused on accuracy, consistency, and collaboration.
  • Develop, maintain, and refine estimating SOPs, standards, and workflows that support scalability and informed decision-making.
  • Oversee bid strategies, pursuit planning, and go/no-go decisions to ensure profitable and competitive opportunities.
  • Guide the preparation of detailed cost models, scopes of work, and purchasing goals across all projects.
  • Allocate to the estimating team and expertise effectively to balance workload, capacity, and employee well-being.
  • Lead implementation and optimization of estimating software, databases, and emerging technologies.
  • Partner with operations, preconstruction, market leaders, and executive leadership throughout the pursuit process.
  • Oversee subcontractor and vendor engagement, prequalification, and database management.
  • Provide estimating insight for recruiting, talent development, and long-term organizational planning.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the company through industry involvement and professional engagement.
