About The Position

The Director of EnMed Research will serve as a strategic research development leader within the School of Engineering Medicine (SEM). This role will help faculty build and expand collaborative research relationships across the Houston Methodist Research Institute (HMRI) and the broader Texas Medical Center (TMC) ecosystem. The position will cultivate extramural funding opportunities, facilitate multidisciplinary research collaborations, and provide oversight and support for the development of core research facilities that serve SEM's research mission. These efforts will collectively strengthen SEM's position as a leading translational research enterprise at the intersection of engineering and medicine.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a relevant field (engineering, medicine, or a related discipline).
  • Expertise and demonstrated experience working at the interface of engineering and medicine.
  • Experience with both academic research and working with industry.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with faculty, industry partners, and institutional leadership.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary research initiatives.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience providing oversight and supporting the development of core research facilities.
  • Familiarity with the Texas Medical Center, HMRI, or the broader Houston biomedical community.
  • Familiarity with technology transfer and commercialization processes as they relate to academic research.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic research development efforts aligned with SEM’s mission and priorities.
  • Collaborate with leadership to integrate research with organizational priorities.
  • Implement and evaluate SEM's strategic research plans to assess the effectiveness of the research program and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Build multidisciplinary research teams by connecting SEM faculty with investigators across HMRI and the broader TMC ecosystem.
  • Identify funding opportunities to support faculty research programs aligned with SEM's research strengths and institutional priorities.
  • Support the writing and development of high-quality grant proposals.
  • Provide development and oversight of core research facilities that support SEM's research mission.
  • Optimize use of core facilities, equipment, and staff.
  • Oversee budget and resource management.
  • Manage personnel within the team, providing mentorship, performance oversight, and professional development support.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Promote best practices in research ethics, safety, and data management.
