About The Position

The Director of Engineering will lead the engineering design and development team, for the assigned region, for single phase and three phase distribution transformers. This role combines strategic leadership with engineering management, focusing on achieving business objectives and targets while overseeing daily engineering operations ensuring the successful design, development, and production of high-quality distribution transformers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering, including 5+ years in a leadership role within a manufacturing environment, in transformer or electrical equipment manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in electrical distribution equipment design and application of associated industrial standards such as ANSI, ASTM, IEEE, and CSA.
  • Proficiency in engineering design and analysis tools (e.g., CAD, FEA, simulation software) and productivity and ERP software.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Proven ability to lead diverse teams and foster collaboration across departments and disciplines.
  • Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of distribution transformer design and associated manufacturing processes a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and execution of the engineering department's strategic goals aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate with other department leaders to align engineering initiatives with business priorities, budgets, and timelines.
  • Help drive innovation by identifying and sharing opportunities for new technologies, materials, and processes to enhance product performance and reduce costs.
  • Represent the engineering function in cross-functional leadership meetings, contributing to company-wide decision-making.
  • Develop and manage engineering budgets, ensuring optimal allocation of resources.
  • Manage day-to-day engineering functions including sales, production and quality support.
  • Maintain design compliance with applicable industry standards, government regulations, and certifications such as ANSI, ASTM, IEEE, CSA and DOE.
  • Manage departmental capability and capacity through skill assessment, employee training and strategic hiring to meet customer demand and sales forecast.
  • Periodically review and evaluate engineering practices and procedures to ensure effectiveness and implementing best practices.
  • Manage and scale department productivity through tracking and establishment, as necessary, of departmental OKRs and KPIs.
  • Manage, build and mentor a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide feedback, and identify development opportunities for team members through effective coaching and goal setting.
  • Help drive collaboration between engineering, production, quality, and other departments to optimize workflows and resolve technical challenges.
