Director of Engineering

Internet Archive Canada
Remote

About The Position

Internet Archive Canada is a non-profit digital library dedicated to digital preservation and access to cultural heritage. We operate independently, with our own facility, our own team, and our own mandate, and we partner with other Internet Archives now operating around the world. We are looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our team and oversee our data centre in British Columbia, a purpose-built facility holding more than 100 petabytes of cultural and historical data. This is a hands-on leadership role in which you will manage people, oversee the infrastructure, and guide the projects that put our data corpus to work.

Requirements

  • Senior engineering or networking experience, with real depth in system administration, data centre operations, and infrastructure management.
  • Hands-on comfort with open environments and running production workloads on Kubernetes, ideally across multiple clusters at once.
  • A track record of hiring, managing, developing, and (when necessary) letting go of engineers, plus experience managing contractors and vendors.
  • An advanced degree or equivalent professional experience in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Strong communicator who can work across a variety of stakeholders in a non-profit setting.
  • Eligible to work in Canada, and open to travel within Canada, including to the BC Interior, as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in digital preservation is a plus, not a must.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team. Hire, onboard, develop, and, when necessary, offboard engineers and contractors. Help build a culture people want to work in, on a budget that reflects our non-profit reality.
  • Oversee the data centre. Manage day-to-day operations of our 100+ PB facility in BC, including performance, security, and scalability, as our collections continue to grow.
  • Lead data mining projects. Design and oversee the execution of projects that draw on our growing data corpus, some projects running across multiple concurrent Kubernetes clusters.
  • Oversee the infrastructure. Our stack is Linux and open source end to end: Kubernetes, open standards, and a fair amount of custom code developed in-house. You will help keep it running and continue to evolve it.
  • Manage vendors and partners. Build and maintain relationships with vendors, and help develop computing and storage services that connect us to other non-profit research centres.
  • Drive projects. Take complex initiatives from planning through to completion, balancing scope, time, and resources, and drawing on modern project management approaches, including AI-assisted tools, where helpful.

Benefits

  • extended health benefits package
