Director of Engineering - Mapping

MappedinWaterloo, ON
CA$175,000 - CA$225,000Hybrid

About The Position

Mappedin is the platform for digital indoor mapping. The company transforms building floor plans and spatial data into dynamic digital maps that power navigation, operations, analytics, and safety across complex environments. Mappedin’s platform has mapped more than 10 billion square feet of indoor space across 86 countries, supporting destinations including Simon Property Group malls, Los Angeles International Airport, Major League Baseball stadiums, and Hudson Yards. We are seeking someone to own the technical direction, delivery, and team health of the engineering group responsible for how Mappedin creates, renders, and exposes maps — the AI-driven and operational pipeline that turns raw venue inputs into accurate, structured indoor maps, and the SDK that renders them for customers and partners. This is the engine behind Mappedin's growth strategy: faster, cheaper, more automated map creation and a high-performance rendering layer are what let the platform scale. As the company pushes toward automated and customer-assisted map creation, the mapping pipeline and rendering SDK need dedicated senior engineering leadership — owning the ML/automation roadmap, the data quality bar, the throughput of the map-making operation, and the rendering engine.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in software engineering with 3+ years leading and growing teams.
  • Track record shipping data-intensive, ML-driven, or automation-heavy systems at scale.
  • Comfortable in a high-autonomy scale-up; builds process where it's missing without over-engineering it.
  • Strong foundation in data pipelines, ML/AI systems, or computer vision / geospatial processing.
  • Credible enough to make architecture calls and earn the trust of senior ICs.
  • Genuine fluency with AI/ML in product and in engineering workflows.
  • Builds high-trust teams and develops people.
  • Outcome-oriented: treats accuracy, cost-per-map, and turnaround as the scoreboard.
  • Direct, low-ego, and decision-ready.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with rendering, graphics, or SDK/developer-facing engineering (WebGL or comparable) is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with geospatial, mapping, CAD/GIS, 3D, or imagery-processing domains is a strong asset.

Responsibilities

  • Team leadership — Lead and grow the mapping engineering team (ML, data, pipeline, and rendering/SDK engineers), owning hiring, performance, development, and retention. Set a high bar for craft and ownership.
  • Mapping pipeline ownership — Own the roadmap and delivery for the end-to-end map creation pipeline: ingestion of venue inputs (CAD, IMDF, imagery), automated feature extraction, AI-assisted authoring, QA, and export into the formats the platform and SDK consume.
  • Rendering & SDK ownership — Own the SDK and rendering layer — how maps are drawn and exposed to customers and partners — either directly or through our platform applications.
  • AI & automation — Drive the application of AI/ML to map creation — reducing manual effort, raising accuracy, and moving toward customer-assisted and self-serve map generation. Champion AI in the team's own engineering practices.
  • Data quality & throughput — Own the accuracy, consistency, and turnaround time of produced maps as first-class engineering metrics. Build the observability to measure and improve them.
  • Cross-functional partnership — Partner with the Platform & Apps Director (whose products consume the SDK and map data), Product, Forward Deployed Engineering (post-sale map delivery), and the mapping operations team to align the pipeline and SDK with real deployment needs.
  • Operating rhythm — Run effective planning and review cadences. Surface risks early and keep leadership informed without being asked.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary: $175K-$225K+
  • 20 days of paid vacation, available from your first day
  • Comprehensive benefits from Day 1
  • A team of bar raisers with low ego and high ownership
