Director of Electrical Engineering

Brelle•Los Alamitos, CA
•$210,000 - $260,000

About The Position

The Director of Electrical Engineering will lead Brelle’s electrical engineering function. This hands-on leadership role sets technical direction, leads complex design work, and builds the team as the company grows. The director owns electrical engineering across products and programs, from system architecture and electrical design through integration, testing, and validation, partnering with mechanical engineering, firmware, systems integration, and manufacturing to deliver systems designed for performance, reliability, manufacturability, and real-world application. The role includes managing and developing electrical engineers, providing technical guidance, establishing sound engineering practices, and supporting the team’s growth in capability and ownership. The director is expected to work across both strategic and technical details, make thoughtful engineering decisions, and help shape Brelle’s technology, team, and engineering organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant electrical engineering experience, including leading the design and development of complex electrical systems for physical products.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing engineers through direct people management, mentorship, and technical leadership.
  • Deep understanding of electrical system architecture, circuit design, power distribution, electrical interfaces, and hardware integration.
  • Experience taking electrical designs from concept through prototyping, testing, validation, and production.
  • Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs across performance, reliability, safety, cost, packaging, and manufacturability.
  • Experience working closely with embedded firmware and control systems, including ECU design and hardware-software integration.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to lead technical investigations from initial symptoms through root cause and resolution.
  • Hands-on approach and technical depth to engage directly in design reviews, troubleshooting, and complex engineering decisions.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines, manufacturing, and company leadership.
  • Comfort working in a growing company where priorities evolve, processes are still being built, and leaders are expected to take ownership beyond their immediate area.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in automotive, motorsports, powersports, aerospace, robotics, or other complex electromechanical products.
  • Experience with ECU architecture and design, embedded control electronics, and hardware-software integration.
  • Experience with high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems, including power distribution and electrical safety.
  • Experience with electrified powertrains, energy systems, or other electrically driven products.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing, automated production, and electrical end-of-line testing.
  • Experience building or scaling an engineering team in an early-stage or high-growth environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the electrical engineering function, setting technical direction, priorities, and engineering standards across products and programs.
  • Lead electrical system architecture and design, balancing performance, safety, reliability, packaging, weight, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Guide electrical design for complex electromechanical systems, including power distribution, control systems, ECUs, and supporting electronics.
  • Make and communicate technical decisions, work through tradeoffs, and resolve complex design challenges.
  • Establish design review, documentation, verification, and validation practices that support quality and consistency as the team scales.
  • Lead electrical design from early architecture and requirements through detailed design, prototyping, integration, testing, and production.
  • Partner with mechanical engineering, embedded firmware, systems integration, and manufacturing to ensure electrical systems work across the product.
  • Oversee design and integration of electrical interfaces, control electronics, wiring, connectors, and related systems.
  • Lead system-level investigations and root cause analysis, driving issues to resolution.
  • Ensure designs account for applicable electrical safety requirements, environmental conditions, electromagnetic compatibility, and production constraints.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing on practical, repeatable approaches to assembly, testing, and quality control.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop electrical engineers by providing technical guidance, setting expectations, and supporting individual growth.
  • Establish ownership, priorities, and accountability across electrical engineering projects.
  • Build a collaborative team culture in which engineers take initiative, challenge assumptions, and solve problems together.
  • Identify capability gaps and help shape the hiring plan as the organization expands.
  • Develop engineering processes and standards that improve execution without unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Partner with engineering and company leadership to align electrical engineering priorities with customer requirements and business objectives.
  • Work with cross-functional teams and customers to understand technical requirements, communicate tradeoffs, and resolve issues.
  • Balance competing program needs while maintaining technical quality and execution.
  • Help build the engineering organization, tools, and processes needed to support Brelle’s growth.

Benefits
