About The Position

This is a Senior level managerial position within the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and is responsible for overseeing all operations within the District Office, as well as any branch offices associated with the district. The incumbent of the position will communicate, motivate, train, and evaluate on direct work performance, and is responsible for time and attendance of subordinates. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection protects, conserves and manages the state’s natural resources and enforces its environmental laws. Requirements

  • Ability to supervise people.
  • Knowledge of management concepts and principles.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; or any combination of post-secondary education and/or verifiable related experience, for a total of four years
  • The incumbent of this position, in accordance with sections 110.1127 and 435.04, Florida Statutes and DEP Directive 422, Background Investigations, is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Travel as required.

Responsibilities

  • Overall management and supervision of all district staff. Managing personnel issues, including fair and unbiased hiring; training; mentoring; evaluation; and taking disciplinary actions in a timely way as needed. Responsible for time and attendance of direct report subordinates.
  • Planning, organizing and reviewing work of district staff to ensure the DEP mission is accomplished; levels of service met; and state and federal work commitments are met.
  • Managing an effective, efficient permitting, compliance and enforcement program for the regulatory areas under district jurisdiction.
  • Managing the district budget effectively and efficiently, including fair and regular distribution of available rate.
  • Ensuring the highest levels of public service are provided by staff.
  • Acting as a liaison for the DEP with all levels of local government, stakeholder groups, and other interested parties.
  • Representing the DEP on a variety of boards, work groups, and councils related to the agency mission.
  • Working cooperatively with the Water Management Districts to implement and enhance shared or parallel programs.
  • Representing the DEP to the Governor and Cabinet as required.
  • Forging a good working relationship with other parts of the DEP which may reside within the district, such as the Parks, ORCP, or law enforcement sections.
  • Providing water quality certifications and processing permit applications for Everglades construction and restoration projects.
  • Participating in inter-agency review and planning activities associated with Everglades restoration activities.
  • Preventing and detecting fraud. This position is required to immediately address any allegations of fraud or suspected fraud.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
