About The Position

Another Source is partnering with the University of Pittsburgh to find a Director of Counseling Services. This is a leadership role at a major public research university, focusing on student mental health and integrated wellness. The position involves leading a large, multidisciplinary counseling center serving over 35,000 students. The role offers the opportunity to shape campus-wide wellness strategies, rebuild team culture during a transition, and collaborate with senior leadership. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, emotionally intelligent leader experienced in university counseling centers or higher education mental health.

Requirements

  • Earned degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related mental health field (doctoral degree preferred).
  • 7+ years of relevant clinical experience and licensure (or license eligibility).
  • Progressive leadership experience within a university counseling center, higher education mental health setting, or similarly complex clinical environment.
  • Experience supervising clinicians and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong operational, administrative, and financial management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, foster collaboration, and lead through complexity and organizational change.
  • Commitment to ethical, student-centered care and inclusive excellence.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and emotional intelligence skills.
  • Experience balancing clinical excellence, operational effectiveness, and organizational culture.
  • Understanding of the relationship between student well-being, learning, belonging, and student success.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and campus stakeholders.
  • Cultural humility and demonstrated ability to lead within diverse environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for the University Counseling Center.
  • Lead and support a multidisciplinary team of therapists, psychologists, social workers, trainees, and embedded clinicians.
  • Foster a culture grounded in trust, transparency, accountability, collaboration, and psychological safety.
  • Strengthen organizational communication, role clarity, and shared understanding across teams.
  • Balance student access and responsiveness with sustainable clinical practice and clinician well-being.
  • Oversee departmental operations including staffing, budgeting, workflow management, assessment, and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, accreditation, and professional standards.
  • Advance integrated approaches to student wellness through collaboration with various campus departments.
  • Utilize assessment, operational insight, and data-informed decision-making to support strategic planning and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a visible and trusted campus leader and advocate for student mental health and well-being.
  • Contribute as a divisional leader within Student Affairs, helping advance broader initiatives related to student success, belonging, engagement, and wellness.
