Director of Content Engineering

TenexNew York, NY

About The Position

Content Engineering is a new discipline that makes scale, governance, and speed possible in modern marketing without sacrificing craft. As Director of Content Engineering, you will build and own the system that produces editorial content at Tenex. This role is not about using AI to make the old playbook faster, but about breaking the old playbook entirely. You will treat content the way a product team treats software, with versioned workflows, encoded brand voice, tested quality bars, and a system that compounds with every piece published. The default at Tenex is to build with the frontier, and your job is to ensure this posture is reflected in every word published. You will build and own a portfolio of editorial franchises across three content pillars (research, applied, and education) to establish Tenex as the leading publisher in its space. The franchises are the deliverable, and the system that produces them is the moat. Initially, you will be the sole member of the team, with the mandate to eventually hire writers, freelancers, and contractors to execute against the system you build, ensuring the function scales beyond your individual contribution.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in content, editorial, or technical writing.
  • At least a few years of experience owning a function at a B2B SaaS, media company, or similar high-bar publisher.
  • Proven experience building or scaling a content system.
  • A builder's mindset, treating content like a product with workflows, briefs, evaluators, dashboards, and version control.
  • Ability to describe a system built end-to-end and the metrics it moved.
  • Whipsmart writer and editor, capable of producing high-caliber content and significantly improving drafts.
  • Technically fluent, comfortable with the modern AI stack including prompt design, agent workflows, evals, content APIs, and basic scripting.
  • Ability to pair with engineers without translation overhead.
  • Deeply AI-pilled, actively using frontier AI tools daily and understanding their significance.
  • Strategic thinking regarding how content programs ladder up to revenue, effective formats for different buyer journey stages, and decision-making on what to discontinue.
  • A strong sense of 'soul' in content, maintaining quality and point of view even under pressure.

Nice To Haves

  • Bonus credit for having already built AI-native content workflows that produced real output, not just demos.

Responsibilities

  • Build the content production system, including designing workflows, prompt libraries, agent stacks, and quality checks to transform raw insight into published work.
  • Engineer every part of the pipeline (research, drafting, editing, repurposing, distribution) for repeatability and quality.
  • Encode the house voice through style guides, evaluators, and reference sets to ensure consistent brand voice in all system outputs.
  • Own the editorial product, including the calendar, briefs, deadlines, distribution checklists, and performance dashboards, operating the editorial function with a product management approach.
  • Launch and operate editorial franchises across research, applied, and education content pillars, defining formats and owning the quality bar for each.
  • Write and edit content to a high standard, capable of producing a 2,500-word piece and significantly improving drafts within an hour.
  • Run AI as the default, identifying, testing, and integrating new models and tools, and building workflows for efficient content production.
  • Measure content performance as a product owner, defining and tracking KPIs related to revenue (organic traffic, MQLs, SQLs, pipeline influence, content-assisted revenue, engagement, AEO rankings), reporting weekly, and iterating based on performance.
  • Obsess over the buyer and revenue-driving metrics rather than vanity metrics.
