About The Position

The Director of Construction provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all residential construction, rehabilitation, rental maintenance, and development activities. This role is responsible for directing all aspects of construction operations, including field supervision, project planning and scheduling, quality assurance, budgeting, procurement coordination, subcontractor management, safety compliance, and continuous process improvement. The Director ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, on budget, and to the highest standards of quality while supporting Pensacola Habitat for Humanity's mission of building homes, communities, and hope. The ideal candidate combines strong technical construction expertise with exceptional leadership, organizational, and business management skills.

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Building Science, Civil Engineering, or closely related field OR 10+ years of residential construction leadership experience, including single-family, multi-family, and townhome projects, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive residential construction experience.
  • Minimum 3 years leading construction teams or multiple projects.
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and quality control.
  • Strong understanding of residential building systems, permitting, inspections, and local building codes.
  • Experience using construction management software and Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to meet organizational insurance requirements

  • Affordable housing or nonprofit construction experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day construction operations across multiple residential projects.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop Construction Supervisors, Superintendent, Project Leads, and field personnel.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Help develop future leaders within the Construction Department.
  • Partner with executive leadership to establish strategic priorities and departmental goals.
  • Oversee project schedules from preconstruction through homeowner completion.
  • Ensure projects remain on schedule, within budget, and meet Habitat quality standards.
  • Coordinate construction sequencing, inspections, permitting, procurement, and subcontractor scheduling.
  • Anticipate project risks and develop proactive solutions to minimize delays.
  • Review project performance and provide regular status reports to leadership.
  • Establish and maintain standardized construction best practices.
  • Develop quality control systems that promote defect-free homes.
  • Conduct regular site visits to ensure workmanship meets approved construction standards.
  • Implement lessons learned to continually improve construction processes.
  • Monitor construction budgets and forecast project costs.
  • Participate in value engineering while maintaining quality and long-term durability.
  • Review purchase orders, invoices, change orders, and subcontractor pricing.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Promote a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.
  • Monitor jobsite safety, documentation, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with permitting requirements, inspections, and Habitat construction standards.
  • Work closely with Procurement, Community Development, Programs, Development, Finance, Assets, and Executive Leadership.
  • Build positive working relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, municipalities, volunteers, donors, and homeowners.
  • Represent Pensacola Habitat professionally within the construction community.
  • Lead by example with integrity, professionalism, and servant leadership.
  • Participate in organizational planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support innovation, process improvement, and operational excellence.
