About The Position

We’re hiring a Director of Community Development to lead the Tribe’s Community Development, Cultural Services, and Tribal Environmental Protection Agency functions. You will provide strategic direction and administrative oversight for programs that advance community planning, cultural preservation, environmental protection, interdepartmental coordination, and other Tribal priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resources, community development, planning, anthropology, history, archaeology, cultural resource management, public administration, or a closely related field, as determined by the Tribal Administrator.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in community development, environmental protection, cultural resource management, public administration, or a related field.
  • At least three years of supervisory, program management, grant management, budget, or regulatory compliance experience.
  • Strong leadership, communication, judgment, confidentiality, budgeting, grant administration, project coordination, and regulatory-compliance skills.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, collaboration platforms, data tracking, and project management systems.
  • Valid California driver’s license and continued insurability through the Tribe’s insurance carrier.
  • Ability to satisfy applicable pre-employment requirements, including a physical, FBI fingerprint background check, DMV printout, and two-year negative TB test result.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Tribal governments, Native American communities, Tribal sovereignty, cultural resources, environmental protection, or community planning is preferred.
  • Experience integrating cultural values, traditional ecological knowledge, community priorities, or Tribal planning goals into programs or projects is preferred.
  • Familiarity with GIS or environmental data systems is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered in accordance with Tribal hiring practices.

Responsibilities

  • Direct programs, projects, staff, budgets, and work plans; coordinate community planning, infrastructure, housing, facilities, land-use, and other development initiatives.
  • Develop long-range strategies, policies, procedures, ordinances, budgets, forecasts, contracts, grant applications, compliance reports, and implementation plans aligned with Tribal priorities.
  • Oversee programs, staff, budgets, events, education, outreach, language preservation, and partnerships that protect and promote Tribal culture, history, traditions, and community identity.
  • Coordinate with the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, leadership, cultural staff, monitors, and agencies; ensure appropriate protocols for culturally sensitive information, artifacts, ancestral remains, and historic resources.
  • Lead TEPA programs involving land, air, water, natural resources, environmental health, monitoring, assessment, waste management, pollution prevention, restoration, and emergency response.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Tribal, federal, and state requirements, grants, permits, and program standards, and serve as liaison to governmental agencies, consultants, Tribal programs, and regional partners.
  • Manage environmental equipment, vehicles, monitoring systems, records, and technical resources while supervising assigned staff, including hiring, training, work assignments, performance management, discipline, time, attendance, and schedules.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, community events, and required gatherings, and perform other duties as assigned.
